What are the best teams?

The best academy is SL Benfica's, with a near-perfect score of 79 out of 80. Portuguese teams make up two out of the top three sides in this list. The Netherlands and Belgium dominate the top spots, with 7 of the top 13 sides coming from these nations.
There are some semi-professional and amateur teams that do impressively well, too. Melbourne City (NPL) are the best semi-pro team with a score of 66/80, while AKA St. Pölten have the best amateur academy, with a score of 65/80.

Methodology

This list was made using FM Genie Scout 20, and the columns Training facilities, Youth facilities, Junior coaching, and Youth Rating are all taken directly from the app. The Training description and Youth description columns reflect what is shown in the game. I have totalled the Genie Scout columns and sorted the sheet by that total.
I've included teams with a Youth decription of "Great" or higher (Youth facilities rating of 14 or higher). I've also excluded any teams from the top five divisions in Europe in an effort to keep costs down - the emphasis is on cheap, after all. Obviously "cheap" varies depending on the team you're managing, but there should be something here for everyone.
Training facilities have been included so that if you arrive a little late to the party, there is a greater chance of the newgens developing a little at the club. If you get them on day one, you can ignore this column.
Note that this list is not exhaustive. I've stuck to Genie Scout's ratings, but I know there are some teams that have "Great" or better youth facilities that I have not included. Often these are B teams, which seem to inherit their descriptions from their parent clubs. But some are like Solihull Moors, which have a Youth description of "Great" but Youth facilities value of 3, which should result in "Basic" or "Poor". Here, I've stuck to Genie Scout's values.
I am also indebted to u/Joltie for their list of youth intake dates in Football Manager 2020. These dates are listed in the right-most column. Some nations do not have an intake date, and you may not see them every produce newgens, but I've included them anyway just in case. These are marked with a dash in the intake date column.
Finally, be aware that a nation's youth rating is very important. While Pyunik sits pretty high on the list, Armenia's low youth rating means the club may never produce a quality newgen. That said, they are worth checking thanks to their top-notch facilities and very cheap asking prices.

2020.06.01 08:19 amyranthlovely Japan Travel, COVID-19, And You: Guidelines On Travel - Pandemic News Update Thread - June 2020

June 2020 - Japan is closed to International Travel at this time. Please wait until official Government announcements are made and protocol established before booking or rebooking any flights, hotels, or other forms of entertainment for any future trips - and be aware that we may not see this happen for places like Canada, Europe, the USA and the rest of Asia for quite awhile yet. The rate of infection for COVID-19 is still high, and every country seeing an end of the first wave needs to prepare for the second. It is unlikely Japan will allow tourism to restart in the face of a second wave.

Travel Restrictions Arriving In Japan are noted here on the MOFA Website. As of April 3rd, many countries such as the USA, Canada, China, Korea, and most of Europe have been banned from entering Japan. As all International flights have now been rerouted to Narita Airport and Haneda Airport, please check the official websites linked for up-to-date information on Entry and Quarantine Restrictions by country. Note that transit between the two airports will land you with a 14 day quarantine before you can leave the country, unless you take a private cab from one to the other as public transit is not an option. This is prohibitively expensive for many (up to $400.00 USD, depending on traffic), and we would advise to call your airline to have your flight changed as soon as possible.
Travel Restrictions returning FROM Japan are updated here by the IATA. An Interactive Map explaining restrictions is found here, and sourced from IATA information.
A backup of the original thread with minor changes is found in our FAQ. Please check here for the original post from when this situation began, and here for the most recent thread from this event.

CONFIRMED CASES UPDATE: 06/30

As of this writing, there are 18,631 confirmed cases in Japan, 972 people have died.
NHK News Japan has a graph of existing cases in Japan by prefecture here. This breakdown is provided by NHK Japan - not the english website, and this information is culled from the Ministry of Heath in Japan.
NHK World, the english subsidiary, provides further information and a link to the toll-free information lines for tourists in Japan, as well as daily updates to total infections and deaths.
The Johns Hopkins CSSE map is another source for confirmation of cases in Japan. This map shows breakdown by location in Japan specifically.

TOURISM NEWS UPDATES

06/29 - From The Japan Times - Japan Adds Cuba And 17 Other Nations To Entry Ban List Amid Pandemic The countries set to be included to the entry ban list are: Guyana, Cuba, Guatemala, Grenada, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Haiti, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Algeria, Eswatini, Cameroon, Senegal, Central African Republic, Mauritania, Iraq, Lebanon and Georgia.

06/19 - From NHK News - Japan To Ease Entry Restrictions From Abroad. The government has already started negotiating with Thailand, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand on the issue. It hopes to mutually ease entry restrictions with Vietnam late this month at the earliest.
06/15 - From NHK News - Abe Warns Against 2nd Wave; Vaccine Tests Underway. Abe said international travel restrictions will be gradually lifted, while anti-virus measures are implemented. He said the government will cautiously study easing restrictions, taking into account the infection situations in individual countries.
06/12 - From the BBC - Formula 1 2020: Japan, Singapore And Azerbaijan Races Cancelled. Formula 1 has tried to find a way to hold the races in 2020 but announced on Friday that was not possible in the uncertain global situation. The historic event at Suzuka is off as a result of Japan's ban on many international travellers.
06/12 - From The Japan Times - Japan May Let In Quota Of 250 Businesspeople From Four Countries Daily. Japan plans to ease its coronavirus travel restrictions by letting in up to around 250 business travelers per day from Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and Vietnam, government sources said Thursday. Please note, this does NOT apply to tourists or tourism from those areas - and as you need to apply for a Visa to enter the country to begin with, you will not be approved if your business is tourism.
06/10 - From NHK News - IOC To Finalize New 2020 Olympic Plan In September. The IOC now plans to discuss measures to prevent coronavirus infection and reduce costs with all international sports federations and come up with a final plan in September.
06/08 - From The Japan Times - Getting The Wheels Back On Japan's Travel Industry.
06/08 - From Japan Today - 'It's 2021 Or Never For Tokyo' Confirms Senior Olympic Official. High-ranking Olympic official Pierre-Olivier Beckers on Saturday made plain that the delayed Tokyo Olympics "will be held in 2021 or not at all". "It's unthinkable to keep such a project on the go for any longer considering the enormous costs and all the thousands of people involved."
06/06 From NHK News - Japan To Ban Entry From Another 18 Countries. The 18, including Cuba and Lebanon, will be added to Japan's entry ban list. The addition will expand the list from 111 countries and territories, such as the United States, Brazil and Russia, to 129.
06/03 - From NHK News - Tokyo On Alert As New Infections Spike. The increase comes one week after the central government lifted the state of emergency for the Tokyo Metropolitan area.
06/01 - From NHK News - Tokyo Moves To Step 2 In Virus Recovery Plan. The metropolitan government plans to relax restrictions in phases at two-week intervals, while evaluating the extent of the infection. It may move to the next step earlier than planned if the number of infections remains low. Officials also plan to issue a "Tokyo alert" to urge people to exercise vigilance if there is a resurgence in cases.

MONTHLY SUMMARY

May 2020
The State of Emergency that began in April was extended in May due to the strain presented on the medical system, even though daily infections were seeing a downturn. A mere 10 days later, it was revealed the SOE would be lifted in 39 prefectures, but remain in places like Tokyo, Hokkaido and Osaka to further alleviate concerns with the health care system. 12 more countries were added to the Travel Ban list in the meantime. The SOE was later lifted for the areas still covered, such as Tokyo, Osaka and Hokkaido after consultation with the COVID-19 panel. It was also revealed that if the Tokyo Olympics could not go on in 2021 due to COVID-19 spread, they would be cancelled outright, although the IOC advised they are doing their best to plan for as many possible outcomes as they could. Kitakyushu, newly reopened, began to see a rise in the spread of infections and immediately began closing attractions to curb the spread. The current round of closures is expected to last until at least June 18th. Finally, after widespread confusion, Japan quelled rumours it would pay for half of tourists' expenses as a poorly sourced article had indicated. This article was clarified in english to state that the credit would only apply to local, domestic tourism within the country - and as there is no indication the borders will reopen any time soon it is prudent to advise this will not apply to International tourists at all. As new cases begin to surface again in Tokyo, the Minister in charge of the virus response says there are no plans in place to revive the State Of Emergency for Tokyo or Kitakyushu.
April 2020 Summary
With the virus increasing in spread Japan began increasing travel restrictions into the country on April 3rd, including Canada, the UK, Greece and most of Europe. As travel restrictions increased and flights were getting scarce, foreigners were given an automatic Visa Renewal of 3 months, no application necessary. A State of Emergency was declared, initially for only 7 prefectures, but it was then shifted nationwide on April 16th further restricting movement to, from, and within the country. On April 29th, Japan added 14 more countries to the ban list, barring citizens or those who had traveled to many parts of Europe, Asia and the Caribbean.
March 2020 Summary
The reality of the pandemic spread began to set in worldwide and countries began issuing Travel Advisories to their citizens and urging them to return home immediately. 14 day quarantine on arrival for some countries was requested by officials, and towards the end of the month, Japan posted travel bans for citizens from China, Korea, the USA and parts of Europe that were already seeing a large increase in the spread of the virus. The Tokyo Olympics were postponed officially, with a re-start date of July 23rd, 2021 being selected. Trains in Japan began to set slower schedules, due to the lack of tourists and locals traveling in order to curb the spread of the virus.
January 2020
01/31 - The NHK has published an article reporting that JNTO has a phone number to call should tourists currently in Japan require assistance. We have reprinted the information below, and ask that you check the JNTO's official website for any further information.
"The Japan National Tourism Organization is offering phone consultation services for foreign tourists who are concerned about the new strain of coronavirus."
"The Japan Visitor Hotline offers 24-hour services in Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean. The hotline can refer callers who may be infected with the virus to the nearest medical institution. It also provides information on measures to prevent infection such as hand washing and gargling. The organization encourages foreign tourists to call if they have any concerns."
"The hotline number is 050-3816-2787."

PAIR #3
PAIR #4
Pair #5
PAIR #6
PAIR #7

PAIR #10

I’m truly sorry if your characters didn’t make it.. How can I make it up to you? This was a hard season to cast and I promise you those that didn't make the cut will all return at some point in a future season.
If you need to update a loved one’s age or your character’s current profession, please do so in the comments (I should have included this in app, my bad). I updated the returning players' ages given the last time they played.
Also: Thank you for your time and effort with the backstories! They are super interesting and I will try and incorporate them into the writeup if the opportunity presents itself. I have a feeling this season is going to be cutthroat…
(EDIT: THE SEASON HAS ALREADY BEEN SIMULATED AND WILL BE WRITTEN AND POSTED AFTER TONIGHT)

2020.04.07 05:24 sadwaterlily My life has been wasted.

I've spent most of my life feeling severe loneliness and deep sadness. Sometimes I go through periods where I spend days or weeks being on the verge of tears and hurting with all of my heart. Then there are periods where I simply feel empty and defeated.
My "father" abandoned me when I was 4. I moved to another country with my mom and grandma (we lived in a former USSR country) in 1997. He was supposed to join us a few months later, but never did. He initially gave us excuses, until he finally stopped answering the phone. He went so far as to tell his co-workers to play dumb and act like they didn't know him when my mom tried contacting him in the hospital where they both used to work. I haven't seen or heard from him since. No birthday cards, no phone calls, no emails, nothing. From cyber stalking I know he's alive and well and never had a deep "reason" to do that.
When I was in kindergarten, I had two good friends, whom I would only talk to in Russian. I learned the language of the new country (no, not English) quickly, but refused to actually speak it for more than a year. I'm not even sure why. In the winter of 1998-1999, my teacher told my mom I might have to spend another year in kindergarten due to my verbal communication issues. It scared me and I immediately started talking non-stop to all the kids and teachers there. At the report card at the end of the year, the teacher even wrote something along the lines of "At first - you wouldn't say a word. Later, you couldn't stop talking". I started school in 1999, just as planned. My verbal attack paid off.
When I was in 2nd grade, I moved to a new school, and met my first best friend. I loved her, we had a lot of fun together, and we were also good friends with almost all the other girls in class (and even some of the boys). We lived close to a small park, and always went to the library to pick "new" books to read. That was probably the happiest I've been in life (ages 7-8). In the summer before 3rd grade, there was a new girl in the park who taught me how to rollerblade. When school started, it turned out she was going to be in our class. The 3 of us became friends, but things somehow got awkward. I don't remember what happened that day, but it ended with me deciding to take a different route and walk home with the new friend instead of walking home with my best friend, like we did every day. As I started walking in the other direction, I looked back, and the look on my best friend's face broke my heart. It stayed with me ever since and I still feel emotional and guilty when I think of it. I hurt one of the very few people in my life who loved me. If there was one thing I wish I could take back, it's that day. We made up and remained friends, but sadly, I had to move away at the end of the year.
The summer before 4th grade, my mother forced me to move to an awful town to live with her awful new partner. To summarize things quickly: he made me spend my 9th birthday crying alone in the street, hit me once when I was 9-10 and pushed me so my head hit the cold, hard floor, always smoked indoors no matter how many times my mom and grandma asked him to stop, always yelled. He always insulted my looks and my weight. I wasn't overweight then, but ironically, the constant anxiety and insecurity of living there led me to seek comfort in food, so that I was overweight by 11-12, nearly underweight by 13 after months of restriction and compulsive exercising, and developed bulimia at 13-14, because I had no discipline and missed good food. No one ever said anything about any of this, and I decided to repair the situation by myself. I mostly recovered and switched to a relatively healthy life when I was 14-15. I also took self-defense lessons so that no one would ever hurt me again.
I switched schools after 7th grade, because both the students and the school itself sucked. This is when I really started feeling alone. When I was in the 8th and 9th grades, I made friends and had a little bit of a social life, so I had hoped the previous year was only temporary, that the awful loneliness I felt was behind me. It wasn't. My grandma's death made life weird. It took months for me to even feel anything, but I suspect that eventually it did take a toll on me. When I was 15, I started high school, and read a lovely article about how the LHC in Switzerland was about to bring the world to an end. It didn't, but that short episode of panic was enough to trigger a severe anxiety disorder. I spent 10th grade in a permanent state of paralyzing anxiety and dread. I couldn't go to school most days. I couldn't even watch TV. I didn't go outside. I forced myself to sleep over and over again, because that was the only way to make it stop for a few minutes\hours. But I always woke up with pain in my chest and a feeling of impending doom.
I was completely isolated. I had no friends. And by no friends, I mean no one at all. Not a single person to hug or even text. All I wanted was to be held, comforted, loved. My mom yelled at me every day. I went from being the best student in my class in middle school to failing almost every subject in high school because I couldn't bring myself to go there due to all the anxiety. Eventually, I told my mother about my fears and feelings. She sent me to a psychologist. At the end of the year, I was told I either had to repeat the year or go somewhere else. That somewhere else turned out to be a nightmare. I was lonely, miserable, and hopeless. It felt like life would never get better. The year from when I was 16 to when I was 17 was probably the worst year of my life. I was forced to take a horrible drug called zyprexa. It made me gain something like 25kg. I now had ugly strech marks on top of everything else I was already dealing with. The psychologist I grew attached to basically threatened to stop seeing me if I didn't see a psychiatrist and started taking those awful "meds". Agreeing to that was the worst mistake I even made. He said my anxiety was due to OCD.
When I was 17, I switched to taking evening classes in a new town. I was still lonely and anxious, but being around mostly 20 something year olds and not hostile teenagers was such a relief. I was determined to finish school on time. And I did. I stopped taking that poison ("med") and slowly started feeling and acting more human. Eventually I stopped seeing the therapist. I was longing for romantic love so badly. I often cried myself to sleep, wondering when I would finally get to feel love and affection. I felt pangs of sadness and jealousy whenever I saw girls my age fall in love and live life, while I was missing out on literally everything. I took 3-4 showers a day and stayed up until 4am almost every night. Ever since I was 12, my biggest dreams in life were the same: having a loving family of my own, and moving abroad. I hated the country I was living in. I never felt like I belonged, I hated the society there, and most importantly, I had no real future or prospects there.
In the winter of 2011-2012, I worked part time in a store and took preparatory classes for the university entrace exams. I was fired for being "too sensitive". My mom and I slowly repaired our relationship. We started taking European trips and went out for dinner sometimes. Those things were unthinkable when I was younger, because we had no money back then. The anxiety fully went away by the time the spring of 2012 came and I received the results of the exams. I got accepted to the best university in the country, and moved to a new city, where I lived in the university dorms with roommates. In the summer, I fell in love for the first time. It was one sided. My feelings were intense, I had hopes, but he rejected me and broke me heart. I spent the first 3 months in university crying and hurting. In the winter, I made friends for the first time in 4-5 years. A guy and a girl. I suddenly remembered what laughing felt like, what talking about personal stuff in real life and not on online forums feels like. I went out with my friends to bars in the downtown area and took part in school activities. I finally rejoined the world. I had another intense crush on a guy. Again, it was one sided and my heart was hurting. Throughout the year, I lost more than 20kg, and did the best I could to look pretty and be outgoing.
2013 was such a special year. One evening, I went out by myself and noticed a cute guy who was standing outside a bar with some friends. I felt brave. I walked up to him when he was alone for a second and started awkwardly smiling and flirting with him. To my surprise, he returned the smiling and flirting. We spent the evening hanging out with his friends and then hearing live music, and we exchanged phone numbers at the end of the night. He hugged me and kissed my forehead and I was jumping up and down with excitement for half the night when I came back to my room. A week later, we met again, just him and me. I told myself not to get too hopeful, that nothing was probably going to happen because he had a girlfriend, but still, I had a feeling....and my gut feelings don't lie. We kissed and nearly ended up having sex in the park and omg I was so happy! My very first kiss. One of the happiest memories of my life. We only met 3 times, and then he had to go home (he was only visiting the country), but I'll treasure that experience for the rest of my life.
I met another guy a couple of months later, and we casually dated. We weren't in love and it was never going to be anything serious, but I finally learned what it was like to have a sexual relationship, to be desired and appreciated and treated with respect and be given someone's undivided attention. We ended on good terms and went our separate ways. I met my very first (and unfortunately, so far only) boyfriend in the autumn of that very same special year. We were together for 18 months, 10-11 of them long distance. In August\September of 2014 we spent a few weeks travelling together. We discussed our possible future together. We spent time in parks, had nice dinners, romantic nights in the hotel together. Memories that will stay with me for a lifetime. I usually hate summers, but 2014 was different. My heart aches to feel that way again. To be in the arms of a loving guy. Happiness was so short lived. I never took it for granted, but the moment was over before I knew it :(
In the winter of 2014-2015, our relationship took a turn for the worse. It wasn't long distance by that point, so the heartache of missing him and the disagreements about visits etc. weren't an issue anymore, but other problems presented themeselves instead. We had a lot of intense arguments that ended with either me or him or both of us in tears. I was trying to figure out how we could have a life together. I was hoping we could rent an apartment together later that year, when I was finished with university and finally living abroad. Something I was working towards for years. He was more hesitant. He was reluctant about moving to the country he knew I was going to move to (that I spent years learning the language and familiarizing myself with the visa requirements, life prospects, etc.), even though it was neighboring his home country and he knew the language fairly well (so moving there wouldn't have been nearly as dramatic for him as it was for me). He suggested me to do my master's degree in his home country instead, even though he knew that it was a lot more expensive and I didn't know the language at all. I told him I would be okay with moving to his home country, and building a life together, but asked him for two years in my dream country, to have the experience I've fantasized about for so long. He wouldn't do it. And worse: he made it sound like I was supposed to move to his country in order to study, almost like it would be a coincidence and we would just continue dating, no real progress or commitment. He was a few years older than me but didn't seem to want to have an adult life with me.
I was under a lot of stress in the spring\summer of 2015: final exams, finalizing my visa for my new home, working out details for the following year, getting ready for a new life. I was stress eating\gaining weight and my period was really late. The "highlight" of my final semester in university was taking a pregnancy test in the toilet of the computer room (they were clean and usually private) and crying uncontrollably when it was negative (was it relief or something else? I don't know). At that moment I knew I didn't trust my boyfriend to handle such a hypothetical situation well, that I would probably have to be the one calming him down instead of it being the other way around, and it became clear to me we weren't supposed to be together anymore. We broke up that week. At the time it felt like the right decision to make.
I moved abroad by myself in the autumn of 2015. To the only country that ever felt like anything resembling home, even though I had no family or personal history here. I fell in love with a guy I was taking language classes with. He had a girlfriend (like most good guys), so he rejected me politely, but it was too late. I spent a few weeks sobbing and feeling hurt. Not a new feeling, but you never quite get used to it. I spent Christmas and New Year's Eve by myself. I felt so alone. I was watching couples and families and my heart hurt. I wanted that so desperately. The first year wasn't easy, but I was making progress. I made some friends, travelled, tried being social, improved my launguage skills some more. I felt lonely often, but I told myself it was natural, that I was new and adjusting to my new life and my new country. I reassured myself that I was doing the same things that worked for me before, that love and happiness would come. They never did. My ex boyfriend and I met up a few times, for a few days at a time: in the autumn\winter of 2015, in the summer of 2016, in the spring of 2017. But my love life and sex life have been 100% dead for 3 years now. My ex and I remain friends (we live in different countries, so we rarely see each other in real life) but romantically it just wasn't meant to be. I had a drunken one night stand in 2017 that made me feel even more lonely than I already was, if that makes sense.
In reality, I've been single, very lonely and very unhappy for 5 long years now (other than those few days in 2015-2017). The past 3.5-4 years were especially lonely and miserable. Filled with disappointments, isolation, longing for love and closeness but never being able to get anywhere close. Ever since I moved to my current apartment\town in the autumn of 2016, my life has stood still. None of the friends I made my first year here stayed in the area, they all moved on with their lives. I'm so tired of groups. I don't want these pointless conversations about "where are you from" etc. with random strangers in a circle or whatever only for it to lead nowhere. So I gave up sometime in late 2017, after many disappointments and many evenings of forcing myself to go out and try socializing, only for me to always end up going home alone in the dark and the cold by myself without making any progress and having to cry myself to sleep. I had one date that autumn, but he told me he just wasn't feeling the same way (translation: I wasn't pretty enough for him). I just want romantic love. I don't want to move around anymore. I don't want to travel anymore (the sentiment was here even before it became physically impossible for the entire world). I just want a real home. With a mother and a father and a daughter. Not in a "oh every family is unique, there are lots of different types of families" kind of family, but a real one. The kind I never had. I had spent a good 2-3 years on dating websites\apps in parallel to the real life attempts. I'm not a fan of the concept at all, but I gave it more than a fair chance. I really did. It only led to more negative feelings and wasting my already limited emotional energy.
My master's degree was an epic fail. I spent my days wishing I was at home with a baby instead. My fellow students all felt so much younger than me, even though we were the same age (some even older than me). I was so done with the student lifestyle. I hated having to pretend to have professional goals and act like I was interested in what I studied. Worse than that, it turned out verbal communications were the main component of the program, and every class required an oral presentation lasting an hour. It's bad enough to have 20 pairs of eyes on you - it's miserable having to do it in a language you don't speak well. I had blackouts and panic attacks quite a few times, where I couldn't even speak one word. It was humiliating. Towards the end of the 2nd year, I held a few presentations where I actually managed to speak (with visible shaking and stuttering) but it was too late. I was expelled from the program. 6 months of job search anxiety followed. Eventually I found something. The first year was miserable. I was physically and mentally drained. It's supposed to be an office job, but I was often asked to do physical tasks, despite only being the weak, slightly overweight girl I am. I was hoping to go somewhere else in 2020\2021, but unfortunately, with the virus and my already limited options, I'm hardly in a position to do that.
My attempts to lose weight and get back to my adult low weight all failed as well. The closest I got was in 2017, with intense restriction and diet pills, but even then I was still 5kg away from where I needed to be. Being lonely makes it very difficult to eat healthy. In 2019 I even hired a professional trainer (that received many good reviews, and was known for helping people with motivation issues\low self esteem) despite my financial situation not being the best. He spent 3-4 months working with me twice a week on both the diet aspect and targeted training, but eventually, he said that unfortunately, he felt it was pointless for us to continue working together, because my emotional eating makes it impossible for me to actually follow his program properly and make real progress.
I'm so heartbroken and defeated. My life is being wasted. Years of loneliness with no sign of it ending. Always having to fight and struggle and be rejected, only to get nowhere. Having to watch girls my age getting married and having babies and having a life, while I'm missing out, feeling left out, unable to be part of the life I want. Spending every Christmas and most birthdays alone. I resent the media and generation Y so much for trying to glamorize being single until you're 35-40 and spending your best years on having some "career" or visiting random villages in Guatemala. I'm tired of being judged and looked down on for my dream being a "modest" one, an "old fasioned" one, not "independent" enough, not "feminist" enough.
What hurts more than that, is this condescending "advise" people tend to give, when I try confiding in someone in real life or online: "you just need to learn to be happy alone". I don't want to be alone! I've spent most of my life alone. I've lived alone for 5 years. No one took care of me when I was sick. No one helps me do laundry or carry water bottles. No one is there to give me a hug when I'm sad. No one to fall asleep next to. I always do everything by myself. I solve every problem by myself. I travelled to so many places by myself. Business or sad "vacations". I take care of my residency permits by myself. My mom visits me a few times a year (maybe not in 2020), but that's hardly the same. And even she is worried about me not having a loving guy in my life yet and being isolated. So you're going to lecture me about "learning to be alone"? I never try forcing my views on others. When someone says: "I wanna travel to South America", I don't respond with: "you just need to learn to be happy with only taking a trip to the local grocery store". If someone said, "I want a dog", I wouldn't respond with "just settle for a pencil instead". So why do I have to be lectured about how it's my fate to be single and lonely until the end of days and acceptance is the only option. Or waiting patiently until it "happens" by itself. It never does. It hurts so much that so many girls have loving husbands and babies and homes but I was "selected" to be one of the lonely girls.
I spent 6-7 hours writing this and I don't even know what I'm trying to say\ask.

2020.03.28 17:01 frank42starr Guatemala Restaurants During Coronavirus Curfew

For those in Guatemala, either as tourists or long-term, restaurants are currently open, but only offering take-out. Things may change in April, but just in case you may want to to use this information until May 1st. Take-out is only offered until 2 p.m. Altho the curfew ends at 4 p.m., restaurants are giving themselves 2 hours to close and get their employees home. Restaurant web pages and Facebook pages may not reflect this information, just as their online menus may not be up to date. There are rumors of restaurants working later and offering take out up to a later hour. However, you need to contact any restaurant by phone, email, WhatsApp, etc. to confirm this. Food delivery services such as Glovo and Ubereats are available. Delivery men hope that you will accept delivery in person, since they hope to receive a tip, or propina. Take out service is good, and the food enjoyable. I hope this information will help you to enjoy and get the most out of this experience.

2020.03.13 08:30 ImaginaryConclusion4 10 Exciting YouTube Facts You Should Know

10 Exciting YouTube Facts You Should Know
YouTube gains over 100 million video views each day and costs billions. But it hasn’t always been like that. So we in 4K Download decided to walk you through some of the most exciting and astonishing YouTube facts you probably don’t know.

Birth of YouTube
YouTube was created and launched in 2005 by three former PayPal employees: Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim.
The idea came to them at Steve Chen’s place party in San Francisco when they were unable to share the videos of the event because of an email error.
The domain itself was registered on Valentine’s Day, the 14th of February 2005. Which possibly explains the next fact.

Original YouTube intention
Initially, YouTube was supposed to be a dating website called “Tune In Hook Up.”
But the three founders decided to alter the concept and develop a video hosting.

First YouTube video
The very first video on YouTube was uploaded on Saturday, April 23rd, in 2005. One of the co-founders, Jawed Karim, posted the video of his visit to the San Diego Zoo. In the video, Karim talked about elephant’s trunks. The video is still on YouTube and is titled “Me at the Zoo”.

The most popular YouTube videos
The most-watched non-music video is “Masha and the Bear”, a Russian animated television series for kids. At the moment of writing, it has around 4.29 billion views!
No surprise though that music videos are the most searched ones on YouTube. A song “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee is currently the most popular music video on the platform with 6.64 billion views so far.

Google owns YouTube
This fact alone is probably not a secret at all, but you hardly know that Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion in stocks only 18 months after YouTube was founded.
And thanks to Google, the platform is now being monetised and lets the creators monetise their content.

YouTube success stories
In 2014, the famous YouTube star, Grumpy Cat, earned more money than Gwyneth Paltrow – an Oscar-Winning Actress.
Justin Bieber is another success story, one of the first YouTube stars to be more specific. He started his career path with posting covers on YouTube which were discovered by Usher who later paved Bieber’s road to the success level he now has.

The most searched YouTube how-tos
The most popular how-to tutorial that is searched for on YouTube is “how to kiss.” The second one is “how to tie a tie.”

The longest YouTube video ever made
The longest video that has been ever uploaded on YouTube is the clip by Jonathan Harchik and lasts for 571 hours, 1 minute and 41 seconds.

My computer couldn’t even play this video. Let’s see if yours can!

Localised versions of YouTube
In June 2007, YouTube rolled out several localised versions of the platform. People in different places would get local recommendations and features, as well as localised YouTube domains (.uk, .fr, .ru, etc.).
Initially, only these 10 countries got their own YouTube - the U.S., U.K., Brazil, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, and Spain.
Currently, more than 98 countries worldwide have their own YouTube version. Countries like Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, and Uruguay got their local platforms in January 2019.

Bonus fact
You can easily download any content from YouTube and enjoy YouTube Premium features for free with 4K Video Downloader . Download videos, playlists and even entire channels of your favourite YouTube creators with a straightforward app of4K Video Downloader.

2020.03.02 23:32 ryloriles The Neverending Food List

2 years ago, my husband and I moved to Providence. Since day one, I've been compiling a list of places with awesome food. We use this list when we're stuck on where to eat or what to order and I thought some other people might benefit from it too! Please please please add your own opinions and recommendations! And, remember, this is just one persons opinion and we all have different tastes. Above all, I just like trying new food. I hope this helps with someones indecisiveness.
Some of these places I have Reddit to thank for, others I learned from coworkers, stumbled across, or haven't even visited yet but am DYING to.

La Mei Hot Pot - Absolutely love this place. Pretty straight forward, if you like interactive food experiences you'll love this. It can be expensive or cheap, depending on your appetite. I, personally, like to get the veggies and meat platter so It normally comes to 50$ for two people. Which I still think is really decently priced, healthy food, and makes for a fun date night. My husband and I went here for our anniversary shitfaced and high and had the greatest time ever.
Troop PVD - I can't say much about their food cause I've only eaten here once, but the atmosphere is what makes this place. Hip hop music & digs with some of the tastiest drinks including the best mudslides in Rhode Island (other than BI). Also, they have some really fun trivia nights, etc.
Tree House Tavern (Warwick) - If you're looking for a nice place outside the city for outdoor cocktails and/or brunch in a laid back atmosphere, this is the perfect place. Very family oriented restaurant with creative and kooky decor. The food is nothing extraordinary imo, but the atmosphere is unlike anywhere else near Providence.
Beef Barn - I just think this place is adorable, iconic, and affordable. Simple beef sandwiches on rolls and delicious shakes in old-timey scenery.
Asian Bakery & Fast Food - The best Banh mie you will find in Rhode Island. Fuck all those hipster imitations that charge $12 a pop. This is the REAL DEAL. Its cash only and you have to look for it, a bit. But the price is right and you won't find anything more authentic... That bread crunch, though.. Also, try the steam buns, but beware of butt explosions.
Mi Guatemala - One of those places where you have to know what to order. The fried whole fish looks like a popular dish. The service is INCREDIBLE. I've never felt more attended to in my life. Some of the biggest margaritas I've ever had and the real kicker, ICE COLD BEER GLASSES <-- i dont know anywhere else that does this in town.
Taunton Ave Bakery (Portuguese) - This was love at first sight. After my husband and I got back from our honeymoon to portugal, we could not stop thinking about pasteis de nata. Here, they serve the most delicious and perfect pastries in town. We have become weekend regulars. Try the beef pockets and don't forget to grab a meat and cheese sandwich (or two) off the counter before you go. **Bonus Tip** Go early Thursday morning to get the pasteis de nata fresh.
Caprichos Antioquenos Bakery (Columbian) - Authentic columbian food in large portions, at low prices. Its a little intimidating going in here, because it seems the English speaking is minimal and I also feel you have to know what to order before you go. The food looks amazing, someone please tell me what to order here next time!
Spoonems (Cranston) - We went here specifically for the corned beef hash, but had trouble choosing off the menu cause EVERYTHING looked delicious. I ended up getting some kind of apple cinnamon pancakes that were to die for. It always seems warm and welcoming in there, if not a little busy. It is a little pricier than your average diner but well worth it.
India Restaurant (Sunday/Weeknight Dinner for 2 + Wine 49.95) <--- nuff said, there outdoor seating and sunset views also make this a great date night location.
Modern Diner (Pawtucket) - kitschy, overhyped spot. Something cool to see once, but nothing beyond your average truck stop diner food.
O’dinis (Portuguese) - Absolutely love this place. Affordable, authentic, family-style portuguese food. You can tell everyone in this place knows eachother. The inside of the restaurant is pretty bare bones, but you don't need much when the food is this good. Their seafood is to die for and they don't charge you an arm and a leg, like most places in PVD.
Italian Corner (East Providence) - Bare bones shop for classic italian sandwiches, I may have gotten a bad view of this place because I went when they were "understaffed," although they didn't seem very busy, the service was reeeeaaallly slow and the sandwiches did not live up to hype. Am i missing something here?
Big King (Fancy/North Owners) - The best thing about this restaurant is their bad-ass menu. Asian fusion cuisine, in a fine dining atmosphere, with a menu thats written by the chef into a plain journal. I had fun looking at the past menus by flipping through the pages. I think its something everything should experience, but for the price, not sure I would go again.
Slow Rhode (New American) - A friend of mine recommended this as "cheap eats." But I have to disagree. The food is good, but it reminds me of most all other hipster places coming out now. Deviled eggs should be served by the dozen and not cost more than 6$.. but, once again, just one persons opinion here, and clearly I'm rather cheap.
La Gran Parada (Dominican) - If you need to feed a lot of mouths on a tight budget, or just one mouth but you're really high, look no further than this place. Most of the staff doesn't seem to speak English, but once they knew we didn't speak Spanish they had the someone who knew English grab our order. It quickly became a favorite for us! I have to admit I don't know what I'm eating half the time, but it doesn't matter cause there is nothing from this restaurant that isn't the most delicious thing you've ever put in your mouth. 15$ will get you 15 pounds of food and in about 3 minutes time.
Tortilla Flats - forever my favorite place for margaritas, it is 17$ a pitcher. Ask for Ryan, he's the best bartender on the East Side.
East Side Pockets - There is really no reason to order delivery food from anywhere else, ever. If anyone knows of a better falafel/gyro restaurant, please let me know. For now, they're always really consistently good, fast, and not too expensive. Perfect place to order from if you're really hungry and need it quick.
Piemonte's Pizza - Little local-owned pizza shop that serves some of the best NY style pizza for a good price. They make a special "Kurdish Pizza" that everyone should try.
Ganko Ittetsu Ramen - Since the closing of Ken's Ramen (RIP waahhh) this has been our go-to ramen shop. The portions are insanely big but the ramen is always consistently delicious, if not really very cheap. Still, relatively affordable and extra delicious with good music most of the time.
Ogie's Trailer Park - go for the drinks and the retro atmosphere, stay for the tots. Granny Boo's kitchen produces some of the finest cafeteria food you will never stop dreaming about. Truffled Tots, Nacho Tots, Garlic Tots, you name it, they Tot it. Even if you're not a junk food enthusiast, its a place you've got to see once in your lifetime, at least. The inside is a funkadelic retro bar with spinning stools and TV's boasting lava lamps and wild cats & the outside is actually a trailer park. Don't be a square.
Kitchen - The hype is more than real. There are only like 5? tables in this tiny little restaurant. But the food is delicious, its the coziest place you'll ever have the pleasure of eating. I recommend going as soon as they open, the ownechef himself will open up shop, pour your coffee, grab your orders and feed each table one-by-one. We had the pleasure of doing this before the sun even began to rise and felt kind of like having a late-night romantic breakfast date. Also, this guy's playlists are always spot on and so relaxing.
Los Andes - We go here for every special occasion and I don't even feel the need to write anything about it here, because if you don't already know about the best place in Providence you must be living under a rock... On that note, I recommend the Pisco Sours and Saltenas as apps. You can't really go wrong with anything here though. They have the greatest service in all of Providence for the amount of guests they serve each evening. They keep expanding and I keep waiting for their quality to falter, but it never does and I hope it never will.
The rest of these are places I've wanted to try and have been recommended but haven't had a chance to! Please let me know your opinions and add on whatever you think I'm missing!
La Lupita
California Taco Shop
Tacos Don Nacho
Tailor Shop (Trendy lunch tacos//never open)
La Casona (Columbian/Central Falls)

2019.11.06 18:15 MurlocAndHandler Travel Advice: three to six months in Central and South America, first time backpackers

My husband and I are Americans in our 30s living in Guatemala. We've traveled a bit but never for more than a week and always with a car. We want to backpack through Central and South America for 3 to 6 months, but we're in the very beginning stages of planning. I'm talking haven't even bought a backpack or set dates yet. It feels like a big undertaking for our first extended trip without our own car, but our demeanors are suited for it. We're adventurous, flexible, and don't require everything to go smoothly a hundred percent of the time in order to enjoy ourselves, plus we're basically inseparable and we don't get fussy without alone time. The way we like to live, I think we can manage as long as we're prepared enough.
We'll be in Peru for three weeks in January, so the trip won't be at least until the Spring, and we'll have a chance to field test some of our equipment there. (Which is great because I haaaate the idea of setting out for six months with brand new gear.)
So my question is this, can anyone point me in the direction of where to start? Are there resources you'd recommend where I can learn about what kind of backpacks I need for this trip, what kind of shoes, routes to take, transportation in different countries, budgeting advice? Apps you find invaluable, destinations we can't miss?
I don't expect anyone to hold my hand here and write out everything I need to know, but any websites or books I sound check out would be amazing. Although obviously if you do have any personal advice that's amazing too! Thanks and wish us luck!

2019.08.12 07:41 innnnmotion Reflections on 2 weeks in Tijuana (from someone who did not go for sex tourism)

I must admit that before arriving to Tijuana, I knew very little of the city. In part, this was intentional. I liked to travel to places with an almost blank slate, allowing whatever experiences happen to wash over me, building from nothing with as little preconceived notions of where the hell I might be as possible. When it came to Tijuana, I knew oh so very little. I knew it was a border town and I knew there was some sort of a wall. I also briefly lived in Mexico City and dated someone there who was from TJ—as I've found so many like to call it. When she told me this was her home, it was quickly followed by an almost literal bold-face asterisk: "It's not just what you hear in the news and it has so much more to offer." I admittedly hadn't heard the news, but I assumed this news was not the good kind of news. And it's true, the news is, well… often not good. USA Today recently named it the most dangerous city in the world and, just one weekend before my arrival, 31 people were killed within city limits. But whatever. I wasn't going to let the news stop me. Hell, I hadn't even read the news until well after into my arrival to even allow myself to be affected by it. All I knew was that I had just finished a stint exploring up the East Coast of the U.S. and down the West Coast, and it was very important for me to take a bus to the border and walk into Mexico. And that's just what I did.

HOW TO PRONOUNCE TIJUANA
Really quick just to get this out of the way, because I keep hearing my fellow gringos fucking this up too much to let it slide. If you're saying "tee-a-wa–na," you've been throwing in an extra syllable. Make it easier on yourself and say "tee-hooa-na." Or if that's too much, just say "TJ."

CROSSING THE BORDER
The walk into Mexico was… surprisingly uneventful. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but what I found were personality-devoid border security agents who simply asked how long I was going to be in Mexico ("I'd like the six month visa please"), would I be paying the fee in pesos or dollars (500 pesos), and not to lose the paper (like I did once before). "Great, enjoy. Bienvenidos." I walked onward and the sign above shortly after confirmed his greeting. I was on my way with Mexico to my left, leaving behind the USofA for the unforeseeable future.

LAS PLAYAS DE TIJUANA
I still had my Telcel sim card leftover from my CDMX days (which, for the record, works great in the states on the T-Mobile network at a fraction of the cost). While there are cheaper options, if you're looking to cover a lot of Mexican ground, I'd recommend this company as they reportedly have the best coverage. You can also use their app to manage your data usage and load top-ups. 5GB/month will set you back a mere ~13USD. Because of this, I was able to book an Uber directly from the border to Lifestyle Hostel, one of two that exists in Tijuana. It's strange to me that the city doesn't have more of a hostel culture considering it's entirely primed for it with its endless supply of nightlife partying, but I guess that's just not the reputation it has right now. Perhaps one day.
This particular hostel is one block off the beach and boardwalk in an area simply known as Playas de Tijuana. Lifestyle boasts high reviews and at $14 a night for a dorm bed (that's low-end here) with little competition and I can see why. It's a competently ran place situated above, get this, a jiu jitsu studio. The man who did my check-in offered complimentary classes (I think), to which I did not take him up on, but I appreciated nonetheless. Instead, I wanted to take a stroll of the area and my surroundings. I came to Tijuana for whatever it had to offer after all. I was there on a Wednesday night just before sundown strolling along the boardwalk heading towards la frontera, the infamous physical barrier between here and there. Mariachi men were playing the standards, everything from hot dogs to half-dozen shrimp on a stick could be purchased, and families were soaking in the last of the waves and rays. I found a place to sit for a while, just to revel in the sights, sounds, and smells as I felt absolutely giddy at the fact that I was back in Latinolandia once again. Once I finished basking in this delight, I headed towards the wall. You'll first see it off in the distance, a strange and not at all solid structure that flimsy just shoots off and comes to an abrupt stop in the ocean, almost as if the damn thing is afraid of water. It doesn't look at all effective or menacing, it's not even a wall as much as it's a series of inter-connecting slats. A fence, one might say. Maybe that's why they shout to build a wall. What I found incredibly interesting is how the two countries treat this structure. On the American side, it doesn't appear you can get anywhere within 30 meters of thing. Hell, there's actually another wall behind this wall and a road in between with very official looking vehicles occasionally on patrol. But over here? Over here it carries the sort of character you'd expect from Mexicans. Every section for a good couple of kilometers is covered in mural after mural, some illustrating the divide of nations with another reminding us that everyone is an immigrant. Some are deeply political and some are hopeful and speaks to the unity of humanity. Some just want to express their love for the person their dating. This structure that was meant to say, "get out and stay out," has been transformed into a place of unrestrained expression. Across the street sits a café named Felices días del amor y la soledad (Happy days of love and loneliness).

ZONA NORTE
While I enjoyed the evening at the beach, I am and will always be a city kid at heart, so the next morning I packed up my stuff, ate a street tamale, and took an Uber towards "the city." For reference, here's a map of the areas that most tourists will find themselves.
In the north right along the border you have the most infamous part of town: Zona Norte. While small, it's complete with the seediest sides of life. Sex workers on the streets, noticeable drug use and signs of addiction, and high-end sex clubs. This area is not for the faint of heart. I saw someone getting a blowjob in a parking lot, a lady with makeup running down her face while shooting up in the middle of the day, unofficial "police" chatting up the street-level sex workers, and… some great taco stands. Sex work is decriminalized in Mexico, meaning that in most areas, you don't need license to work in this industry and you won't find yourself in legal trouble for trying to solicit or procure it. In many respects, this is a wonderful thing. Those selling and buying can conduct business that will happen regardless without fearing for their legal well-being. I only wish that the area was safer for everyone involved. It's said that police have completely abandoned Zona Norte, leaving much of it up to self-governance. Enough gets said and written about here, particularly among horny U.S. tourists visiting the renowned Hong Kong Gentlemen's Club. I on the other hand did not partake in any of the trade. It's not out of some moral opposition, but generally… it's just not my thing.
I do want to talk about the bar Zacazonapan, or simply Zacaz as those here call it. Said to have been put on the map to the external non-TJ crowd by Manu Chao, Zacaz lies just on the border of—but still very much in—Zona Norte. To explain Zacaz, you have to understand marijuana in Tijuana. While literally just over the border in San Diego you can buy weed from dispensaries with a credit card, the attitude in Tijuana and much of Mexico is less than accepting. Much of the drug world, including yerba, is Narco controlled. For that reason alone, until this relationship becomes decoupled, the plant will always have a troubled reputation. Zacaz, on the other hand, is a green lover's haven. For whatever reason, much like all of Zona Norte, the police look away. You need to be over 18 and show an ID to get in, regardless of your age, but I assume this is more of a self-imposed restriction rather than any actual legal obligation. The bar resides below ground in a very dim and incredibly dive environment. They sell a vast selection of not one but two beers available only by the bottle and only by the liter. The first time I walked in, I saw nothing but a cloud of thick weed smoke, 4 person tables lining the outer perimeter, and a bong resting right there and center on the bar. Now I've been to my fair share of dives in my life, but I must say, this is a truly special place. You never know what you'll get. The way the seating works, you're almost always interacting with people you don't know. The patrons are rolling joints out on the tables, sipping their beers out of plastic cups, and dancing in the center of the bar on very sticky floors. You get all types, ages, and backgrounds here. The music will jump around like crazy from 80s synth pop, metal, to Latin ballads. People will dance sporadically, get into lengthy conversations, argue, and break out into fist-throwing fights. On one particular night, I witness a chubby man in his 50s dancing to Juan Gabriel while an older sex worker was being pushed out with a bar stool by the staff for trying to steal some drugs off another patron. Words will never fully capture the complete essence of what Zacaz has to offer. Much like the multifacetedness of humanity, Zacaz demands to be witnessed and accepted for everything it is.

EL CENTRO AND AV. REVOLUCIÓN
Literally across the street from Zona Norte is the main downtown and tourist strip named Avenida Revolución. Marking the start is Arco Monumental, acting as a gateway to what the city has to offer. On Revolución, you'll find an incredible array of dive bars dating back sometimes more than half a century. You'll find an ever-exploding craft beer scene, offering some of the finest in the field. On the food side, you can go high-end or eat just as deliciously on the streets. You can also get your fill of independent cinema. Here's a list of my standouts:
I could keep going. I really could. This street has so much to offer, all hours of the day, all days of the week. Honestly you can't go wrong just showing up and sometimes following the sounds to where ever they may lead. Music pours onto every nook.
I have a few other mentions of places that might fall in el centro territory or not as city and neighborhood boundaries always get a little fuzzy, but I can't go without at least mentioning them and the quality experiences they provided.

CECUT AND ZONA RIO
A little to the east of the party scene that is Av. Revolución, you'll find the Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT). Encompassed within this orb of a standout architectural sight is a cultural hub for all. It has the only IMAX theater in town showing an array of films in a 360-degree field. Museo de las Californias can be found within, boasting both a permanent collection as well as rotating exhibits. When I was there, stills from the film Roma were on display. There's a tranquil garden, Jardin Caracol, that contains Mesoamerican sculptures, an array of unique plants from around the region, and a quiet escape from the city that surrounds it. CECUT also offers a nice outdoor area that provides an assortment of weekend activities, like a vegan food festival or an indigenous peoples' dance festival.
Cross the street and you'll find yourself in the popular Plaza Rio, an outdoor shopping mall that'll have all your chains, retail shops, and a large Cinepolis movie theater with the latest blockbusters shown in both Spanish and English.

ALBERCAS WATER PARK VERGEL
If you're here during the warmer months, do yourself a favor and make it out to this robust water park of high-intensity water slide attractions. Unlike the States, you won't find any price gouging here. Entrance tickets are 180MXN (~9USD) and the food and alcohol prices inside are the same you would pay outside. The music was all over the place and for a while was playing some real 80s bangers that just made the whole experience a treat. It's most known for the Slip N Fly, a slide that requires your to go down head first and launches your body 20 meters into the air before plummeting into the water however you find yourself landing. I did it only once and still felt bruised on my left thigh four days later. It's no joke and it's awesome. But come for the day, drink clamatos, hang out in the wave pool, and make some Mexican friends. I went on a Tuesday and stayed for the whole day. While the park was busy, I never had to wait more than a couple of minutes in line. They seem to have a nice system. You can also bring outside food and utilize one of their many BBQ grills.

HOW TO MEET PEOPLE AND FIND EVENTS
As a white guy with blue eyes and somewhat passible Spanish, I found it both easy and accessible to meet people and find events. As with most places in the world though, I recommend using the tools out there.
TJ has a decent Couchsurfing community. Even if you don't use it for lodging, if you travel and want to meet people, the Hangouts feature on the app is an invaluable resource for getting connected with the people who live there and are in the know. Within an hour of turning the app on and broadcasting to others that I wanted to hangout, I had a few people offering to show me around.
As far as finding events, my number one go-to almost anywhere in the world in major cities is thus: go to Facebook, click on events, click on discover, limit the search to the city and the dates you'll be there. Mark yourself as interested in events you may like and then just… show up! Especially while traveling in places where you might stand out, it's not uncommon that people will come up and talk to you. I didn't find this happened as much here as it did in, say Guatemala City, and perhaps that's because of the proximity to the U.S. border and the occasional saturation of gringos in these parts. Generally, though, these apps are tools to find things to do, meet people with common interests, and using that as a launching point to then get connected and in the social circles of those who live where you're traveling.

BRIEF CONCLUSION
Tijuana. You're an incredible place with a lot to offer. One of things I found so touching is just how many people either from here or who have chosen to relocate here have so much pride and passion for where this city is and where it's going. Yeah, it's rough around the edges, but that's part of the charm. That Norteña in CDMX all those months ago was right: it's not just what you hear in the news and it has so much more to offer. The Simpsons, in a rather tongue-in-cheek way, called Tijuana the happiest place on Earth. If you take Tijuana for what it is and all that it is, you just might find some truth in that.

2019.08.12 07:10 innnnmotion Reflections on Tijuana, Baja California, México

2019.08.11 23:54 CuteNoot8 Middlebury immersion is overpriced and a waste of time.

WaaayTLDR: Middlebury Spanish language program is overpriced, outdated and the immersion is with other non-native speakers usually at or below your level.
I know that everyone is super gung-ho about Middlebury Immersion schools, but I have to say I’m extremely disappointed. Like any program, you certainly get out what you put in. I’m a fan of Gab Wyner (Fluent Forever) and have followed a few other polyglots who used the program and liked it. But short of going in with a 24/7 tactical plan and advanced knowledge of language learning or linguistics, this is a ripoff compared with the value of overseas programs.
Super-detailed and ranty review below. (The pain of the $ is still super fresh.)
Basics: I placed into a level 2 in Spanish. There is a level 1 (absolute beginner), 1.5 (beginner+), 2 (intermediate), 3 (Advanced), 4 (Darn near Fluent.) I have an advanced degree. I was at the Vermont campus.
For those that don’t know, you take the language pledge so that you don’t speak English at all. My Daily schedule was as follows:
I had homework every night. Exercises in Grammar Class, occasional presentations, two papers, and about 4-5 pages of reading every night.
The Classes
The classes were shockingly awful. They were equivalent to or worse than basic undergrad Spanish courses. You are still using pencils and crappy textbooks with poor examples. How, when they know so much about language learning and are charging this much, are they not leveraging any technology whatsoever? The homework was busywork that they didn’t check and reviewed in class maybe twice the whole time, and they almost never sent out the answers. So why bother? The homework should have been online/digital and given you immediate feedback. It would have been nice to be able to have focused in on where I was struggling instead of feeling like the class just moved on without you.
They are really, really overdoing the culture lessons. I think learning about a culture is essential to learning a language. But it can be overdone. My essential vocab needed building and I can’t tell you how annoyed I was in week three to be learning the Spanish word for tambourine. Who gives a shit? How many times do you think I’ll use that one again? We spent a ridiculous amount of time on really obscure vocab like the word “spear,” because we spent weeks on indigenous history. And no it’s not because at the 2L you already know all of the basic words. Most of us struggled with forming complex sentences correctly upon arrival. Oh and we had to memorize names and dates for tests. Does knowing Spain had a civil war help me understand the culture? Yes. Should we have had cultural readings? Yes. Does knowing the exact dates of the war help me speak the language better? I think not.
The teachers do not really bother to make sure you have understood. You have classes of about 12 which is big enough to get lost in but still small enough to be embarrassed in. They can talk for an hour at you and if you don’t understand, eh too bad. You can always ask them to repeat or tell them “no entiendo” but they can only slow down for you so many times. Despite what they tell you in week one, it really is keep up or shut up. I understood enough from context but had lists of questions and when by the time I would go to the tutors, they were so out of context, it wasn’t practical.
Their placement and assessments are nonsense. I was in classes with some students who were completely fluent verbally and understood every word the professor said. There were also a few who were on my level and couldn’t understand very well, but we were made to feel like we were slowing others down. I thought I should have leveled down, but professors disagreed and some of my peers were in the same boat, which made me think they just had way too far of a spread of abilities crammed into our “level.”
The Activities
The activities were mostly bullshit like salsa dancing and volleyball. How much Spanish do you need to speak to do those? Not much. The ones that involved more Spanish were things like the cooking class and music classes. But these were just more of us listening to them talk at us – barely any interaction or conversation. I could have gotten the same thing – or better – from listening to a Spanish-language podcast.
The pronunciation clinic was actually the most helpful thing in the entire program. And it was an optional one hour a week thing. I learned more and understood more Spanish because of those sessions than in all of the other classes combined. Bitterly disappointed this wasn’t a daily thing. Our culture class professors caught on that it was needed in week 5 and spent a class just doing tongue twisters with us. Should have been done Week 1.
The Immersion
The teachers and tutors all sat together at tables during the meals so we couldn’t practice with them. In fact, outside of classes and scheduled activities, I didn’t see an opportunity to talk with native speakers at all. Not once. Occasionally I would bump into them when they were walking hurriedly somewhere but that was it. They all hung out together, walked together, and generally ignored us. I knew of a few students that hit it off with a professor or two and they hung out a lot, but they seemed to play favs a lot. I think I had maybe three conversations with native speakers while there, and I felt like I was trying. It’s not actually helpful to me to listen to other student’s badly pronounced Spanish. Yeah, mine was bad too. But the point is you learn by listening and immersing in REAL LANGUAGE USE. Not other students using hand gestures and saying “Cómo se dices la palabra para ‘ice cream’?” or some other incorrect, incoherent and unimportant question in a really bad American accent. I would sit at different places and engage with different people. I was so frustrated because half the time when I was annoyed with myself for not understanding, it turned out it was because the other speaker misspoke or mispronounced all the time. Useless.
Additionally, the language pledge is pointless because everywhere you go when are you doing something you need to, you have to speak in English. Getting a pint at the local pub. Picking up your mail. Asking the cafeteria staff or facilities for anything. The health center. The signs are in English. Everything essential is in English. I know it would be impossible for them to pull off a completely Spanish environment, but it makes a huge difference if you are actually walking around in a Spanish-speaking country and everything is in the language you have to use and everyone you encounter is native.
The tutors are the best resource they have and are really under-utilized. I learned a lot from the sessions I took advantage of. It struck me on week two that if I had had any sense, I would have just found a Spanish language speaker and paid them the damn ten grand for intensive lessons for a few weeks. I’d prob be as fluent as I could be for a second-language learner by now.
The Administration
Not really a direct drawback, but the restricted meal hours are a pain in the ass. They wanted us to eat as a group (220 of us) so that we didn’t hear other languages. So they told you where and when you could eat and we would get nasty e-mails if we dared venture to another spot or different time, even if we did it as a group so we could speak Spanish to each other. It was obnoxious. Additionally, the administration is also outdated so instead of some message board or coursehub, we had dozens of e-mails a day about “Today’s Activities.” Just post it somewhere and tell us where to find it!!
Realizations After The Fact
All of this could have been a lot better if they had given us even a little bit of prepwork. Like here, memorize these 100 verbs and these 500 nouns. Review this phrasebook. Anything. They give you abstract recommendations, but nothing more. I did a lot of review and work before coming (Fluent Forever and other apps, listening to Spanish podcasts, Several Spanish textbooks, practicing with native speakers, etc.) but wish I had had more targeted recommendations.
At the level I was at, I needed to learn pronunciation, expand my use vocab, improve auditory comprehension, and be forced to practice with real speakers. None of that is a focus of the program. It’s sort of a by-product and the time is spent on busywork and irrelevance. I’ve discussed it with a few friends who work in neuro-linguistics and showed them the course content and program and they were mortified at the content and structure. One laughed and commented that they were skeptical if anything other than the textbooks had been updated about the program since its inception. I wish I had talked to them beforehand.
When I pointed these criticisms out to my overly-enthusiastic and uncritical classmates, several of them looked like they had lightbulb moments and reluctantly agreed. I don’t understand why everyone keeps drinking the kool-aid and maintains the enthusiasm. Maybe they are so proud of the fact they have made any progress at all. Or maybe people don’t have anything to compare it to. I don’t know. Maybe it’s the best in the states, but with the cost of a plane ticket and housing, you can get a lot more time at a good program overseas.
Don’t get me wrong, I did make improvements while there. I understand more and can speak more. But that would be true of anything I studied intently for 7 weeks. It’s definitely overpriced and a disappointment in terms of how it’s built up. It’s not at all what I think I could have done with a better learning environment or resources. I’m going to Madrid for two weeks this fall and to a program in Guatemala next summer and am eager to compare the two. But as of now, I so regret going and spending the money.
I think there is an inverted bell curve here for who it benefits. Absolute beginners? Absolutely. Masters students? Probably. Any intermediate speakers? Definitely save your money and spend it on a program overseas. I could have spent almost 20 weeks in South America or Spain for the cost of this program. I could have replicated this program by studying a textbook with a tutor and listening to podcasts or movies all day. If you simply can’t leave the states, go for it. If you have any overseas options, take them!

Me: https://imgur.com/a/desCA2a
I posted in Foreveralonedating with no success so I figured I’d try here. I recently graduated from college and am originally from Guatemala. I’ve tried dating apps but don’t seem to get any matches. Nor do I feel like I have a lot in common with the people I swipe on.
I have a lot of close friends who live far from me but don’t message with me regularly. The only person I’ve been messaging regularly is a girl who is using me. I’d like to find someone to message regularly (get to know, share funny memes and interests) and is possibly willing to meet someday!
If you’re currently in or going to be in WI however, maybe we could go on a date. I love getting to know people!
People call me Ash, and here’s a little about me:

2019.04.02 23:20 stdfreepussy Language requirement before departure

Hi everyone,
I am looking into doing the PeaceCorps in Guatemala. The app deadline is July 2019 and the departure date is March 2020 . The issue I have is that I do not fulfill the language requirement which is either 4 years of high school Spanish within the past 8 years or a minimum of 2 semester of college-level Spanish. However, I did complete the equivalent of 4 semesters in Brazilian Portuguese and studied abroad in Brazil during undergrad. I know this won't cut it, so I plan on taking Spanish classes in the summer and in the fall semester at my state college. Would this be okay and could I submit my application saying that I will complete the Spanish requirement before my departure date?

2019.03.23 19:23 JaniBeez What Really Happened to the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity is Not What the News is Telling You [Part 2] - Finale

Part 1
My running theory was that the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity electronically activated some sort of beacon - the Obelisk - that in turn activated another one on Earth. Most people brushed it off as after tremors of the volcano that erupted that year, but the initiated knew better.
Maria and I arrived in Guatemala and immediately set about finding her contact. She made several calls via WhatsApp, but he did not answer.
"How did he know about this?" I asked, staring over her shoulder at her computer screen as I used to before.
We had booked a hotel in Guatemala City and used it as a base camp while we figured out where the earthly obelisk lay.
"Alex is a security contractor. He told me he was out here, guarding some camp for excavators who had found the obelisk. He said there was a green light coming from a cave that they were digging into." She was typing away rapidly on her laptop as she spoke.
I backed away, sitting down on my bed and took a deep breath. We had been there for a week now digging around for any sort of evidence, but nothing. I laid back, letting my feet dangle over the bed and stared at the spinning fan above.
"I found him."
I sat up a little too fast, staring at the back of Maria's head. "How?"
She turned around, dangling an arm over the chair. "Alex and I used to date," she began sheepishly. "One night, he logged into my Macbook...and never logged off. His last known location came up."
I ignored my moral hiccups on that and we were off. I will not reveal the location of the excavation site, but we did find it in the end. We would not have been able to without Maria there to translate. I cursed myself for not committing myself to learning Spanish in my college years.
Our Jeep managed to get us as far as a remote village twelve miles away from the site. If you have ever traveled to a third world country beneath the United States' southern border, I mean really traveled, then you can already imagine what the village looked like. It was nothing like Cancun. This was village in the middle of a jungle. It was a wonder that Alex, the contractor, received any signal way out there, because I had none on my phone.
The metal sheets that hold the shacks of the village were rusted in some places which was to be expected in a humid jungle environment like that. An old woman was sitting in a rocking chair on a makeshift wooden porch, listening to some Spanish radio. A white, spotted mutt lay right beside her with it's eyes closed. Sweat dripped down the back of my neck and I was constantly swatting mosquitoes away, but this woman with all her wrinkles seemed content.
The village smelled of burnt wood, I thought. Maria explained that people way down south burned their trash. There were no garbage men that came by to pick up people's trash in their garbage trucks like we had back in the states. These people had to make due another way. White smoke stacks of burnt garbage seemed to surround the village. A large truck that clearly did not belong sat on the edge of town.
It was her grandson we spoke with. He was lanky and wore a dirty white tank top. He was darker than Maria. A machete leaned against the stairs to the porch. "No deben ir."
"Por que?" Maria answered back.
I stared back and forth between them as they conversed in a language I did not understand. His body language seemed to convey a sense of urgency, almost like he was pleading.
"What's he saying?" I asked.
"He says we should stay away from the site." Maria snapped at me. "That there was a cave in. Apparently, the Americans triggered it." She turned back.
She asked another question in Spanish. More answers, more questions. Fear in only one half of the conversation and exasperation in another. Maria was the latter. A moment of silence passed and she spoke again, pleading this time.
The young man glanced around anxiously as though Maria did not understand a lick of Spanish. He looked like he wanted to yell at her for split second, but he took a deep breath and spoke evenly. Then, he said something else and gestured for us to follow him, taking care to bring his machete with him.
Chickens clucked and moved rapidly out of the way as we tailed him. Around the back of the house, say a leaning metal shack. He opened the door.
"Pontelos." He commanded, gesturing inside.
Inside were a few white biohazard suits. What were they doing with these? How had a poor village like this come to acquire these suits? None of it made sense.
"He says we should put them on. A truck, probably that big one over there, came through when the excavation first arrived and stayed in the village while they worked. They never came back for it and the villagers decided to open it up. These suits were there, along with a bunch medical supplies were inside.
"How come they never came back for it?" I blurted.
I gazed at them, arching my head. They were rather bulky. I reached for one, but tossed it aside. There were red specks inside one of them that I didn't want to think too hard about.
"This is what we are here to find out. And to locate Alex." Maria added.
That logical side of my brain was starting to clear through the fog of that burning, aching curiosity. This was crazy. Why were we delving into a jungle for an alien artifact that a person and likely several others had disappeared over? It was beyond stupid! This was not a government sanctioned investigation. This was a couple of imbeciles going on some ridiculous adventure quest.
Maria and I put on the suits and she smiled at me. The Guatemalan and several other men led us to a dirt road on the outskirts of the village. Quite a few smoking piles littered the area.
"He says the Americans paved this road. It will lead us to the excavation site." Maria said with thinly veiled excitement.
We made to move forward, but a hand clasped my wrist. It was the man we had been speaking to. "Toma. El humo te puede ayudar."
Maria was already on her way back to the Jeep in a hurry. I could not let her go by herself. I slipped what he had given me into my backpack. I had no idea what his words meant. We climbed into the Jeep and took off.
Just like everything else, I was not sure what to expect. Maria eased the Jeep through the campsite. There were white tents and no one in sight that I could see. We hopped out of the vehicle. Even through the stifling plastic suits, the silence was somehow deafening. Not a leaf moved in the air like it had in the village. NO songbirds chirped cheerily around us. It was deathly quiet.
Maria slammed her door shut and I jumped.
"Will you please do your best to be quiet?!" I hissed at her angrily.
She rolled her eyes. "There's no one around!" She threw her arms up.
"Then why are the trucks still here?!" I kept my voice low but could not stop the irritation from seeping through. I thought this girl was smart, but I was starting to suspect otherwise.
She ignored my comment. "In case you weren't aware, you're not my team leader anymore! So, you can take that stick up your ass and shove it down your throat!"
Maria pushed past me, speed walking through the site. I followed, trying to stifle a rebuttal. It was like she paid no mind to the tatters of biohazard suits or the assault rifles abandoned on the thick, muddy earth. I glimpsed a splatter of blood and tripped over some sort of large, cannon-like contraption. I smacked right into Maria.
"There it is!" She gasped.
Just ahead of us was an enormous mesh of boulders piled over the mouth of the cave. My eyes darted left and right. Were those explosive charges by that tent over there? I surmised that this was not a natural cave in.
"Maria-" I cautioned, but she began sprinting forward.
"I have to know!" She reached the cave-in before I did.
Every single fiber of what made me human was screaming for me to run. I could only watch with dread as Maria scaled the boulders. She tried to pry a rock loose, but when it would not budge, she climbed higher.
"Maria, this is n-not safe! We should leave!" My brain was firing off warning every second that went by. She should not be near those rocks. We should not be there.
Maria managed to heft one loose, creating a small gap into the cave. Something small and red shot out from the hole, striking Maria's face. She let out a shriek and fell back from her perch with a sickening crunch. She lay face up with her left leg bent at an odd angle. A chilling deep sigh escaped through the gap, but my brain had not registered it due to the fact that Maria started convulsing for a moment.
I sprinted forward, sliding on my knees to her, about to lift her torso, but I froze again.
There were three holes in her face plate. Three spiked red spores were embedded in the flesh of her face. One was stuck in her cheek, another one on the corner of her left eye, and the third on the corner of her chin, and they seemed to be trying to burrow in. It was then that I realized that those spikes were starting to wriggle.
Maria's hands slapped up against her face plate in desperation. Tears were streaming down her face, her shrieks piercing my ears. The spore near her eye was moving. A tendril flicked over her eye, seemed to elongate, pulled at the corner of her eye and forced its way inside.
Maria's shrieks turned to inhuman screams of pain that I will never forget as the spore climbed up her chin and into her gaping mouth. The other simply get digging into her cheek, spurting blood all over her face. I scrambled back, terrified.
Then, her screams turned into distinctive moans of pleasure.
"Yes!" Maria's face split into a smile of pure ecstasy. The blood vessels in her eyes popped, turning the whites of her eyes into a Mars red. "I know! I know everything!"
Her skin seemed to bubble and morph as she turned on her side to look at me.
Another voice echoed from the dark cave behind her. "Joooooin us." It rumbled, shaking the earth around me. It was deep. "Fooor I am your God. I am your peeeeaaaace."
Maria stood up, towering over me on her broken leg. It snapped back into place as the spores spread through her body. Her eyes were wide. "Alex is inside and he understands! He can see just as I can see!"
Her voice was distorted and fanatical. She choked slightly and her skin stretched. Thin, long tentacles slithered out of her eyes as her skin reddened and she stumbled toward me with her arms up to the heavens.
"It's come to save us! It was trapped by that beacon but we've rescued it and now, it will save us just like it did for us before!" She gurgled my name. "Let it inside you!"
"Oh, fuck!" I scrambled back on my ass, but she was slow and shaky. Sharp tentacle like claws had grown from her hands and poked out of her suit. She was a monstrosity.
My hand smacked against the device that I had tripped over. My head flashed back to what Guatemalan had given me: matches. But this was a flame thrower! I grabbed it and squeezed the trigger. Intense heat erupted from the end and fire engulfed Maria. No screams from her came. She just fell back and crumbled into ashes, much faster than I thought possible.
The ground shook again. "I will consume this planet!" It promised angrily as I ran for the tent with the charges.
I do not know if I believe in a higher power, but that thing inside that cave was not God. Something had to have been on my side when I grabbed the explosives and managed to hurl it into the gap just as a fine, lazily mist of spores began to poor out. Maybe it was just luck, but the explosion that I set off made the cave-in a lot worse.
I stood there shaking, staring at Maria's burnt body. She had died with a sweet smile on her face, twisted by whatever evolution those spores had induced. She died happy. Her body eventually crumbled into ashes. I stood there for a long time, staring at the cave and shaking with the flamethrower in my hand, but no voice came from it again.
I cried uncontrollably as I drove back. There was nothing else to do. This was the reason that NASA and the rest of the government had abandoned that excavation site. I do not have all of the answers but these are my theories:
That beacon on Mars activated another on Earth when Oppy touched it. Maybe it was as a warning not to approached it. I never found out what the Sumerian had translated to, but I could only assume it was some type of warning about an all-knowing tentacled creature that spread through red spores, infecting life as we know it. Maybe there was another one on Mars and it woke up the thing that had slumbered beneath our planet. Perhaps those beacons are there to keep it locked away but when we excavated the site, we dug too deep and let it out.
Some of the villagers had deduced that smoke or fire can keep it at bay. I figured that what that plasma field on Mars was for, but how the fuck would I ever find out?
Those red specks I saw in that suit was the one that Maria had put on. Those spores were a lot smaller and she had inhaled them. While the smoke in the village was in my lungs, the spores in that suit had urged her on and fogged her thought process. I know, it sounds ridiculous but it's the only thing that makes sense! Fire in any form keeps it away. It kills it. Maybe Earth was constantly fighting it with all those volcano eruptions we have been having lately.
At least two hundred people died when the Volcan de Fuego in Guatemala erupted. The volcano in Hawaii flowed steadily for years into the ocean. I could still hear its words. It said it was our god and maybe it was. I seriously doubted that.
I am a heavy smoker now. I hate the color red. I cry about Maria every other week. The details about what happened after do not actually matter. Do you really care about how I was questioned over Maria's disappearance? As soon as I mentioned the obelisk in Guatemala and how I had someone managed to close it up even tighter, they relented.
Something happened on Mars that killed every living thing on it. That's what I think. The tentacled monster carved onto the Obelisk on Mars flashed in my head every single day. I imagined it was enormous and could cover the entire sky if it ate enough. I hope the day never comes that we find out, but somewhere in the back of my mind, no matter how many cigerettes I smoke, is that aching need to know.

2018.11.07 13:54 petarcticfox r/Conspiracy members who live in Honduras or Guatemala, what can you tell us about how, where, and why "the caravan" started?

All the "how/why it started" reasons I've come across so far are more theoretical: "it's a result of years of political injustice," etc. While this may be [edit: is definitely] true on one level, here, I'm trying to locate more concrete details about how it got organized: Who initiated the idea? Where, specifically, did it start? etc.
Edit: why ask about concrete details? So that I (and hopefully others) can differentiate between fact and fiction. Bc there's a lot of fiction flying around about this.

Maybe sub members could do some crowd sourced research?

below are some articles - u/MrQuizzles commented that many of the ones below are about a Spring 2018 caravan (thank you) -- apparently there have been a number of caravans over the past few years. Why did this particular one in October receive so much press and grow into such a phenomenon...?

Edit: also, apparently the caravans happen annually in April and May during holy week:
throngs of Central American migrants crossing Mexico during Holy Week as they make their way north to the US border.
It's become an annual tradition, and getting publicity has always been a goal for this and other so-called "caravans" that periodically make their way through Mexico.
This year's journey is getting even more attention than usual after a series of tweets earlier this month from US President Donald Trump.
So how/why did one get started in October? This appears to be the first October caravan...
---
October 2018 caravan: The earliest mentions I can find is this associated free press announcement on October 12: https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=es&u=https://www.debate.com.mx/mundo/cientos-de-hondurenos-inician-caminara-hacia-eeuu-sueno-americano-20181012-0183.html&prev=search
here are ap/reuters announcements in english on October 13:
https://apnews.com/20dcf65d203c44ae9858c9c35bde9730
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-immigration-caravan/honduran-migrant-group-treks-north-as-u-s-calls-for-tighter-borders-idUSKCN1MN0RA
AP says:
The migration began swelling spontaneously Friday after local media reported on approximately 160 migrants who had agreed to depart together for greater safety from San Pedro Sula. The aspiring migrants organized via WhatsApp chats.
Can anyone find evidence of local media reporting on the migrants dating from October 12?
I found this:
Spanish: https://www.tribunanoticias.mx/2018/10/12/cientos-de-hondurenos-anuncian-exodo-hacia-eeuu-en-busca-de-sueno-americano/
English: https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=es&u=https://www.tribunanoticias.mx/2018/10/12/cientos-de-hondurenos-anuncian-exodo-hacia-eeuu-en-busca-de-sueno-americano/&prev=search
Some 300 people, including families with small children, gathered at the bus terminal in San Pedro Sula, the second city in the country, located 180 km north of the capital, to depart early Saturday on the border with Guatemala.
---
THE ONE THING I DON'T GET IS: The Oct 13 Associated Press report says the caravan #s increased after "local news" reported the event, but the only evidence of "local news" i can find from Oct 12 are newswire reports by Agence France Press (AFP), like these:
https://www.tribunanoticias.mx/2018/10/12/cientos-de-hondurenos-anuncian-exodo-hacia-eeuu-en-busca-de-sueno-americano/
https://periodicocorreo.com.mx/anuncian-exodo-masivo-hondureno-por-el-sueno-americano/
There is no record of this report on the AFP.com website, which makes it *seem* like this story could have been engineered to some extent by non-local media...

Spring 2018 Caravan:
Apparently the story (edit about the Spring 2018 caravan) hit US news after a Buzzfeed post on March 30:
https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/adolfoflores/a-huge-caravan-of-central-americans-is-headed-for-the-us#.kjVd5o4xK8

The supposed leader was Irineo Mújica of Pueblo Sin Fronteras
https://www.kpbs.org/news/2018/sep/05/migrant-activist-who-led-asylum-caravans-arrested-/

A similar caravan was organized by Pueblos sin Fronteras in 2017:
http://www.pueblosinfronteras.org/refugee_caravan_2017.html

According to this NYT article, caravans have been happening on an annual basis "for at least five years"
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/02/world/americas/caravans-migrants-mexico-trump.html

Here's a Feb 18, 2018 article in the Honduran newspaper La Prensa:

English translation (from Google Translate):
The organization People Without Borders is preparing the migrants' viacrucis, called the Right to Life. The departure from Tapachula, Chiapas, is scheduled for March 20.
The caravan, where migrants from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador participate, is a symbolic act that evokes the need for justice and solidarity among the Mexican people for the thousands of foreigners who annually cross Mexican lands.
"The Via Crucis is a peaceful demonstration, it is the struggle of the migrants who demand a better treatment, the cessation of the persecution of the authorities and protection from being victims of criminals, criminal groups and authorities," explained Irineo Mujica, defender of the migrants
From Tapachula, Chiapas, they will tour Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz and San Fernando and Matamoros, in Tamaulipas. "There are two key points where the Via Crucis will culminate, one is in Nogales, Sonora, and the other in Mexicali, sites that symbolize areas where there are more abuses against migrants, and that is why they are key," Mujica said.
Demands The defenders of migrants told the press that there are currently three migrant hunger strikes in Mexican prisons and six lawsuits have been filed for forced labor, separation of families and medical malpractice committed by the authorities in the centers. detention
