Last Season, we all waited with baited breath for Gerrit Cole's decision which became reality on 12/18/2019 (though the decision was known well prior). Cole was the 132nd Free Agent to sign last off-season. With a little over 1 Month from the beginning of the 2021 Free Agency period. The 2021 Free Agency Period Begins Sometime between Oct 29th - Nov 2nd (based on 5 days after World Series Champ is crowned. 2020.09.29 17:47 Tiny_TinkerInteresting talk with TBM family the other night. Maybe planted some seeds.
I'm still closeted, but we were talking about random Church stuff, missions etc. I brought up Uchtdorf saying that past missionaries were limited in their thinking of how to use technology to share the Gospel. My brother hadn't heard that and immediately chimes in that it's because they severely restricted and controlled our use of any technology! Yes! So we get talking about how sometimes it's actually not so good that the very oldest generations are running the Church and that sometimes it ends up that the younger generations get held hostage by the older generations views sometimes etc. Granted, it was mostly me saying these kinds of things but my brother and his wife seemed to be genuinely thinking about what I was saying and agreeing even at times. One of them brought up the racism of past generations as a point. And I gotta tell you I was thrilled. So then I'm feeling pretty brave and I point to the Proclamation on the Family on the wall and I say I believe it'll get disavowed or changed to be more inclusive in the future, which seemed to surprise them. I told them that I heard, so it was unverified rumor, but I heard that a few apostles already want to, but they have to tow the party line for now and can't override the FP. I said it's not going to be soon but after the most homophobic members are gone plus some buffer time so maybe by the time their child is our age it'll happen. I say it had to happen that way for the Priesthood ban to end or else it might have happened much earlier than it did. I say I'm pretty sure Nelson and Oaks are major holdouts and I'm not sure who else and my brother says, "well there was Packer" so I agree "yeah, Packer was very homophobic. But he's gone already, so I think it'll be a few more like him that need to go before any changes will happen." Man you guys, I was getting even more brazen! I said I think even Elder Oaks knows it's going to happen and is trying to prevent it with how much he keeps saying how the Proc is revelation and these teachings are from God and won't change, etc. And then I said "but once he's dead it won't matter what he said about revelation." Saying something like that would have been scandelous to my uber TBM self. Excuse me?! What prophets and apostles say doesn't matter any more after they die?! Heresy! But I didn't get any pushback from my family members. They were listening and mulling it over! I keep going and point out the Church has said those very things before like with the Priesthood Ban. AND THEN MY BROTHER CHIMED IN AGAIN WITH "yeah, polygamy too" and I was like, "exactly! They specifically said those things will never be changed." You guys, it made me really happy to be having a discussion like this. When I was their age this kind of talk would have made me deeply uncomfortable. It's definitely one of those times where you know that being PIMO helps because if they knew I was already gone they would have felt compelled to defend against everything I was saying instead of thinking about it or even agreeing with me and adding in points to the conversation! I hope this conversation planted some seeds. That after that talk a piece of them feels more ok with being an ally, and that they are more easily able to see the human flaws in the top leadership and maybe will start taking what they say in Conference etc with a with a tiny grain of salt, knowing that things said by today's leaders maybe aren't as revelatory or as "eternal" as they used to think, that some of the words we're hearing today (or this weekend even) have expiration dates in the future.
2020.09.29 00:54 kirantCovid-19 Update for September 26 to 28 (3 day total): 406 net increase in cases, 350 recoveries, 4 deaths
Data is taken from the Covid-19 portal and today's media availability by Dr Deena Hinshaw and Minister of Health Tyler Shandro. Dr Hinshaw's next scheduled media availability is Thursday. In an effort to reduce clutter in these posts, the updates to outbreak facilities is shown here. Top line numbers:
Cases with "Unknown source"
322 (31.2%) in last 7 days (Change: +58 (+3.1%))
+51,289 (~0.79% positive)
63 (+7/-2 based on Friday's post/portal data)
15 (+1/+0 based on Friday's post/portal data)
+4 (1x 60-69, 1x 70-79, 2x 80+)
Division of top line numbers by day (where available):
Because of the reporting method, test numbers do not fully add up to the top line values
As noted by Dr Hinshaw, it appears there was an adjustment to the cases over the weekend, resulting in a small number of cases on Friday (the exact wording was "net difference between Thursday and Friday after adjusting for previously clinically reported cases")

Statements by Minister Shandro:
Testing is crucial for Covid-19 control
Over 1,000,000 Albertans have been tested - a remarkable accomplishment
At start, a few hundred tests could be tested
Wants to acknowledge AHS and Alberta Precision Labs
Thanks Albertans who have gotten tested
Government will act to reduce wait times and speed up test results, expand testing, and prepare for winter
Wants Alberta to remain a leader
Plans for more hiring of more hospital staff?: AHS, in January, built up workforce
Federal tracing app?: Spoke to Minister Hajdu. Still a couple issues, but happy to continue working with Minister
Expanding testing in counties?: Defers to Mauro Chies, who spoke about enhancing testing locations. Some rapid testing in regional centres, though lower throughput
What evidence supports the EMS dispatch changes? Will you provide the proof?: EMS, including dispatch is integrated into AHS over a decade ago. AHS made decision to integrate the last 4 municipalities into AHS for 2 reasons: (1) AHS is borderless, and (2) integrate oversight. Met with mayors of the municipalities last week and agreed to look over information he was provided before AHS proceeded. Will be against changes if the evidence shows response times would be adversely affected, but not what AHS evidence is showing him
Statements by Mauro Chies, Board Chair of APL
Thanks all front line workers
The accomplishment has been made through overtime and flexibility that
There is still lots to do going forward
Drive through testing in winter?: Looking at alternate facilities. Tents worked well in summer (though a bit hot), but need more protection from the elements in the cold
Statements by Dr Hinshaw: Working from Home
Dr Hinshaw has provided the update from home after developing a sore throat on Friday and was tested (negative Covid result). Despite this, doesn't want to pass one whatever it is and will work from home until symptoms resolve
Acknowledges that the job can be done remotely and staying home isn't easy, with many facing financial choices
Encourages people to stay home and to not expose others when sick
20 schools with alerts (1 cases) have had no transmission, with class back
Active alerts/outbreaks (1+ cases) in 113 schools (~5%) with 210 active cases
47 schools have outbreaks (2+), 6 on "watch" (5+)
9 schools with likely in-school transmission
Foothills Medical Centre
Rise in hospitalizations due in part somewhat due to Foothills outbreak
1 death this weekend
Outbreak is a significant concern and great deal of work is ongoing
2 additional units have outbreak protocol - one is a transition unit (case linked to outbreak has been identified), one is a short stay (unclear source and outbreak protocol is precaution)
53 cases, 26 patients, 4 deaths
Likely that more cases will be identified
Critical step is to minimize new spread
Visitation limited to end of life or preapproved essential visitors
39 surgeries have been postponed planned for today. Surgeries are being rescheduled, most booked for the next 7 days
Millwoods Shepherd's Care
19 cases linked to outbreak with 2 deaths this weekend
AHS working closely with operator. They are on site and meeting virtually
Testing offered to all residents and staff
Many questions about the topic
% required to develop herd immunity depends on infection type
Estimates for Covid-19 are 50-70% (Canada's serology suggests 1% of population with infection)
The suggestion of letting spread occur among younger individuals does not take into account drawbacks
The rapid spread means it will likely still spread into vulnerable populations despite best efforts
An approach on herd immunity would hurt the elderly and those with chronic conditions
Death from Covid-19 is also not the only severe outcome: to date, 1/67 between 20-39 with Covid-19 needed hospital care, 1/18 for 50-69, and 1/4 for 70+
These numbers can be a strain for the health system. "We have seen this overload happen in other countries. We do not want it to happen here"
We don't know if long lasting immunity is possible, potentially making all lives lost meaningless
Reliance on development of safe and effective treatments and vaccines is important
The balance of all our health needs until then is important
The lower number of positives on Friday was due to "previously clinically reported cases"
Expectations for flu season?: Depends on Albertans. Some places like Australia had high flu immunization. That plus Covid restrictions limited influenza spread. That is one potential future for Alberta if we go down the same path
Level of concern at Foothills?: As with all acute care outbreaks, this is concerning. The regular testing and aggressive tracing is important and there is a capable outbreak team (partly leading to the large numbers we're seeing). Suggests that Misericordia outbreak has greater unknown spread while Foothills has well understood spread
Lower mortality despite rising cases since July. Is this due to treatment?: It has been observed in a few places. Age specific breakdown may not reflect...possibly just deaths are related to who is being infected. While treatments are improving, we may see increased death because of outbreaks like the ones we're seeing
Halloween?: Working on a guidance document. Looking for a fun, safe Halloween
Thoughts on NHL "experiment"?: Shows the importance of planning early, cooperation with public health officials, and constant communication. Highlights usefulness of the private testing for NHL as to not affect the public's health
Additional information will be logged below:
Calgary Upper NE's active cases: 119 (+13)
The 4th death over the weekend was in Sherwood Park
1: Gold Star Families Monument: Yesterday we celebrated the lives of those Kentuckians, we lifted up their families, and now we have something on these Capitol grounds that show a little bit about our values, and that we value each and every one of these individuals. I invite Kentuckians to come, and to see this memorial.
2: Voting: Early voting, in-person hasn't started yet, but absentee voting is underway. This is my absentee ballot. [holds up ballot] It means that they are being mailed out, it means you have the opportunity to fill them out, and you need to make sure you do it appropriately. There are instructions that come inside of each absentee ballot about not only filling out the ballot, but what you have to do with the internal envelope, signing it, sealing it; what you have to do with the external envelope, signing it, sealing it. Make sure you follow those instructions! You then have two different things that you can do with this absentee ballot: You can mail it, and if you're going to do that, mail it soon. I’m mailing this today. I will have voted. Or you can drop it into a dropbox which the first lady is going to do and we're going to show people what that looks like.
Sec. Friedlander: As of today, more than 1.6M people have enrolled in Medicaid. This is about a little more than one in three Kentuckians and we have added over 250,000 people to receive Medicaid. Next, we have provided over 100,000 households, access to food, through the SNAP benefits. Lastly, we know within the next week or so- 2 million additional meals to seniors across this Commonwealth, and we would not be able to do this without our partners.
Sec. Friedlander: So the next piece that I want to talk about is the pandemic EBT piece: Today, we had a first phase, and we provided those benefits to over 500,000 children across Kentucky. Our partners in the Department of Education helped us do that, we took applications, and we have now just entered the second phase of that pandemic EBT service provision. For August and September, that is over 625,000 children who are going to receive these services, and receive meals, and receive food. This time you don't require an application, we will be sending these benefits to you. There'll be new cards that arrive sometime in the month of October is what we're aiming for. The mail has slowed us down a little bit, but we expect that individuals will receive those cards in October. If you have questions, we have provided our staff with the information they would need to respond to your questions. And you can call 855-306-8959, and select the “food benefits option”, and you will get information about the cards that will come to you and your mail. You'll need your birthday, and some other information to activate the cards; but when you receive them know that those services will be provided, that's related to the number of days that you're in school, or a school is in session. And so that is different for each school, but we have the information to provide the right amount of benefits on those cards.
September is close to being a month with the most cases, already the deadliest month of COVID-19 with 229, and you're calling for Kentuckians to be more urgent. But do you think that Kentuckians might look at you and say, Why aren’t you a little bit more urgent by issuing new recommendations for schools, sporting events, bars, restaurants? You know? -- I've said this before, is a pretty simple equation. It is the level and effectiveness of the rules, times how many people follow them. And you can have great sets of rules and regulations and if nobody follows them, it's not effective. Likewise, if you don't have good enough rules, even if a bunch of people are following what you have out there, it's not effective. Right now we're not seeing enough people follow what's already there and so that takes shifting a little bit. Our goal, and our belief, is that if we can get people wearing masks, if we can get them social distancing, if we can get them following the very basics, we can start decreasing our number of cases.
In terms of Masks, also people look at September and they see a month with the most cases, or likely going to be the most cases, and the most deaths. Are you surprised that some people do question the mask mandate? You obviously, you believe it's working. -- On the mask mandate, it's every single public health official, every single scientist that says that masks are effective, sometimes even very highly effective, in preventing you from getting the virus, and from getting you to spread the virus. We have seen when there is urgency- look at when other states that were- Texas was skyrocketing and put in their mask mandate, and you can bet people put them on with what was happening, you saw a significant decrease. We know they work but we got to wear them.
I got a couple of written questions: two schools in one area that are in the red on the metrics map and both are currently conducting in-person learning. -- Listen, when you hit red, you need to move to virtual because it means your community has so much spread that it is going through your schools, you're putting teachers at risk, you're putting administrators at risk. It is not a state law that makes you do the right thing but you should be willing to do the right thing, because all the data out there shows that it's not responsible, when you are in the red, to be having those in-person, classes.
Alright. It is Monday at four o'clock. That time we come together to do our update on COVID-19 here in the Commonwealth, the challenge of our times.
You know what, I'll start the way that we used to always start because we all need to hear it, especially as it looks like we're going to go into a very difficult fall with this virus, but we're gonna get through this, and we're gonna get through this together. We're going to talk later about how that's going to need us to react and respond with urgency to make sure we're doing our part and mainly to make sure we are wearing our masks. We are not seeing enough of it at the moment. I can plead, I can beg but I can also tell you that for a fact, the amount of our economy that's open, the ability to get our kids back in school, and the number of lives we lose or do not lose depend on a number of things but primarily a number of people willing to wear these masks. So today, I'm wearing the Barbourville Tigers, that's Barbourville Independent. Thank you to their fiscal director Samantha Daniels, for sending it, and appreciate them trying to keep their kids safe.
Alright, next. We are now in the midst of this election coming up in November. Early voting, in-person hasn't started yet, but absentee voting is underway. So remember, you can register to vote until October 5. You have until October 9 to request, one of these, an absentee ballot. After that early in person voting begins on October 13 and we want everyone that's going to vote early in person really to do so before election day because you can spread out and stay safe. But there is no excuse, folks. Voting is a part of who we are as Americans. It is your duty, if you have the ability to vote, to do so, and now you have more opportunities and less excuses than ever before. I want to see a record turnout, regardless of how the elections go I want a record turnout here in Kentucky. And I think that we can and we should do that.
Alright, next up we have Secretary Eric Friedlander, he's going to talk about pandemic EBT, which is our commitment to making sure that our children, and all Kentuckians, are fed, have their basic needs met during this covid crisis.
Couple of quick updates: First I want to begin with the hard work of the folks who have worked at the Cabinet for Health and Family Services to get people eligible and through our systems to be eligible for services. As of today, more than 1.6M people have enrolled in Medicaid. This is about a little more than one in three Kentuckians and we have added over 250,000 people to receive Medicaid. This is important. If we're in, and we are in, a pandemic, it is vitally important for individuals to have health care coverage, so that we can pay doctors and nurses and hospitals, and make sure that the folks who are providing health care can get paid for the services they're providing.
Next, we have provided over 100,000 households, access to food, through the SNAP benefits. This is an important piece to keep people fed during a pandemic. Many people have lost their jobs and this is a way that we can provide those services. Folks who have lost their jobs, we have outreach to many of those folks to see if they need SNAP benefits to see if they need Medicaid benefits. We are actually the only state in the country that I know of that have proactively reached out to those folks who have had to get unemployment benefits.
Lastly, we know within the next week or so- Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have provided, or we'll be on the verge of providing, over 2 million meals. 2 million additional meals to seniors across this Commonwealth, and we would not be able to do this without our partners.
So the next piece that I want to talk about is the pandemic EBT piece. We talked earlier about a pandemic EBT- it goes to individuals, and children, and families who otherwise would be receiving meals and schools, but because schools have not been in session, they haven't been able to access those meals. Today, we had a first phase, and we provided those benefits to over 500,000 children across Kentucky. Our partners in the department of education helped us do that, we took applications, and we have now just entered the second phase of that pandemic EBT service provision. What we've done is we've again, worked with our partners in the Department of Education, they have provided us with information about folks who are eligible for free and reduced meals throughout the educational system. As of this weekend, we sent the files in order for individuals to receive these benefits as well. For August and September, that is over 625,000 children who are going to receive these services, and receive meals, and receive food. This time you don't require an application, we will be sending these benefits to you. There'll be new cards that arrive sometime between- in the month of October is what we're aiming for.
So today, over 500,000 in the first round, over 600,000 in the second, we've signed up well over- we've delivered benefits to about another 1.4-1.5 benefits to individuals in Kentucky during a pandemic. Having food, having health care is very important for the individuals, it is also very important for our communities. So thank you to the Department of Education. Thank you for the workers and cabinet for Health and Family Services, if you're calling those lines and you're calling those numbers, thank you for reaching out to us. Avoid Mondays. And, again, thank you Governor for this opportunity.
Thank you so much, Secretary Friedlander and I can attest to the hard work that the folks at the CHFS have done and in the Education cabinet as well to make sure that our kids are fed and in the worst of times. So without your leadership that wouldn’t be possible, so thank you. So today I'm here to talk about the new school reporting link that has gone live today is September 28th, so it is the first day that the governor recommended in-person classes resume. And so today we knew that the report reporting link for schools would go live. And so our schools are asked to self report Monday through Friday, for each day that their school is in session. And the reason this information is so critical is because it's about our communities. First and foremost, our parents and caregivers. They deserve to know this information. They deserve to know how the COVID pandemic is impacting, not just the greater community but specifically the school building that they send their children to every day. It also is very imperative for our teachers and our school staff to know how this COVID pandemic is affecting the children, and other adults, that they interact with every day. And so I'm going to show you an example of a dashboard and what it looks like today. It is populated by the school's self reporting as you can see on the screen, and the dashboard is updated daily. Anything that is reported over the weekend will be included in the Monday reports. The data will be 1 reporting day behind. Dr Stack explained that earlier- that reports are due by a certain time in the day, and it will be updated by the following day, so it will reflect the data from the previous day. And you can always find the date of that specific report at the top of the table. So for example, if you look today, Monday September 28th, the last reporting day was Friday September 25th, and so at the top of that table you will see, as of September 25th 2020, and that will be the indicator for what those numbers are. And if a school has not reported, that will also be noted on the dashboard. If you look at the left side of the screen you can see in that chart that you can filter at the state level, at the county level, at the school district level, and down to the actual school building level, so you can look at any kind of filter for your community or greater region in your area. If you have questions about your school's self reported numbers, then you need to contact your local school, or the school district itself. And if you do not see your school listed,we ask that you reach out to alert that school but also to let us know by emailing [email protected], and I will close today by saying that this is the first day that this is live; our schools are getting used to this new reporting system. As we will get used to reading this data, making sense of this data every day, and so I'm going to say what I always say, please extend grace to our school leaders, to our teachers, to parents, that are trying to navigate these waters that are very unfamiliar for all of us. Thank you so much.
Alright, I want to thank Secretary Friedlander. I think the steps that we have been able to take during this pandemic to help people have been so necessary and, in most instances, I think that the state has done a very good job. Does that mean and others that we couldn't have done better, and that we can do better in the future? It doesn't, and we should. These are the times where we have to be there for each other and I know our mission, as a part of the state, is to try to be there for each and every Kentucky and that needs us.
Alright, today's, if I call it a “word for the day”, but I hope really sinks in to everybody watching is the word “urgency”. I believe that since, maybe, the traditional start of school. We have become more casual and our approach to COVID, our concerns about COVID, and how well we follow those rules and guidelines that are out there. It can be natural, it's been seven months, and most of us have never had to deal with something like this for seven months. It's probably also psychological in that we have seen specific days and times that maybe our rhythms run on each year: the traditional start of summer, the traditional start of school, where we see kind of changes in behavior. Maybe wanting so badly to go back to pre-COVID norms that maybe we at least try to pretend like it doesn't exist. But the virus is here, and it waits for us to get casual. I believe it's a lack of urgency and some poor decision making that led to what we saw in Florida, which I think just passed 700,000 cases. It's what we saw in Texas, where there wasn't room in some morgues for what they were dealing with. In Arizona, in South Carolina, and in many other places. And when we get casual, when we don't show urgency, what we see is alarming trends in the virus, more cases, and ultimately more people passing away. So we are going to make it through this but when we get to the other side, do you want to look back and think “we could have done better” when doing better is about saving people's lives? Do we want to get to the end of this virus and say, “I'm just not really happy with the fact that I got a little exhausted in it and I guess maybe I didn't wear my mask as much”. You know I lost my friend Alice Sparks at the end of last week. They lived in Northern Kentucky, had a wonderful life, lived life to its fullest, but Alice should still be with us. I can name a half dozen other people that I knew that well that aren't with us anymore. Remember when we are casual, we do not show urgency, the results are somebody that you might not know passing away, but other people know. And what we're seeing right now requires, I think, even more urgency. Can you show the graph of the United States, and what we're seeing in cases. So as you all know, in the beginning of this, in March what we saw was a rapid increase in cases. New York had its hospitals overrun. We saw how that can almost exponentially increase the number of people that we lose. We did something that has been done very few times in history; we took some really, even severe, steps in being Healthy at Home here in Kentucky and we were able to blunt that curve, both as a Commonwealth, and as a nation, though some suffered more. But then we saw what happened when we got into the summer. Again, I think some folks were still wanting to get back to that normal summer you would hear “how could you steal summer from kids?” and “what do you mean the pools can't be open?”. And what we saw was a rapid escalation in this country where certainly the cases overall increased even more than what we saw in March. We saw mask mandates pop up at this point, all around the country, steps that needed to be taken. People, rightfully, being very worried, starting around July 5th. And we saw another decrease. But when you look at that graph we never even we never got down to the levels pre-July, before we saw it coming. And now, what we believe that we are seeing, I believe we're seeing it nationally, is the start of a new escalation; of that line not going down, but going up. And these are total cases that we are seeing in the country. And as we come towards a fall season, and winter- are more people are going to be inside, where we know the virus spreads faster, we’ve got to do better than this. We can't be casual right now and what we do right now may impact us two weeks or a month from now.
Let's look at the Kentucky cases, because what we're seeing nationally, we're seeing here too. Last week we had almost 5,000 cases, the most that we have ever had. Folks, we've been at this long enough to know what we can do to reduce the number of cases. We've done it several times. Yet, we're having the largest number of cases, right now. We've got to have urgency. We've all got to believe that 4,949 cases are far, far too many. And I now believe that we are not sitting at a plateau, but we are seeing what would be the third escalation that we've dealt with here in the Commonwealth. We have to do better. We have to act with urgency. We look at the WH report which came out today. We had been pleased in the weeks before to not be in any of their red categories, we're back in one; we're in the red category for increasing overall number of cases. Thankfully, we're in the yellow category in our positivity rates, because we're doing a lot of testing. But being in a red zone in a time of COVID means our people will suffer. And I had somebody talk, I think that it was an individual who told this to our Inspector General, he said “Well I hear you all, but I just go to the mall and I don't see people with COVID.” COVID is one of these invisible killers, that when you have it, you're quarantined at home, or you're in the hospital, that you’re not seeing out in your community, but everybody knows at least one person now, and sees one person they know whose family is suffering and says “if you all will do one thing please believe this is real”. Let’s listen to them. Let's make sure that we are treating it like it's real. The White House report this week. Lists now red, orange, and yellow zone counties. That's what we do in our incident report.
Here's the red zone: Warren, Laurel, Union Calloway, Knott, Grayson, Marshall, Estill, Clay, Jackson, Meade, Montgomery, Wayne, and Leslie. A lot of these overlap with our incident maps. Now we've had, you know, some groups that, I'm not suggesting it's those up here, try to argue their way out of our red status saying “Oh, that's just individuals in a nursing home”- when it's there, it's out in the community. Certainly if you're reading ours and you're reading the White House’s, let's admit there's a challenge in the community, and that it's time to do more, not to do less.
The orange counties: of course Jefferson now in this orange zone, when it had been in red for a while, Franklin County too. Frankfort Independent operating under the zones we put out is doing small pods starting today, because they're in the orange zone. It’s the right thing to do for the health of the students and of the faculty. But you can see the number and the breadth of the state of these orange zone counties. COVID doesn't care if you're urban or rural; it doesn't care if you are in Northern, Eastern, Western, South, Central Kentucky. It can very quickly explode in your community.
And here's yellow, we want to be green, but very few counties are green right now. And the yellow counties that they see- again many of these are kind of riding that wave that we saw Florida ride: that you have a whole lot of cases and because you've had some, you start to taper off, but then what we have seen a numerous occasions, including Louisiana, which was hit early, and then was hit just as hard again, cause if we let our guard down for one minute what can happen.

...is Mormonism-Shadow or Reality by Jerald & Sandra Tanner. In case any of you are not familiar with the Tanners, they were THE "anti-Mormons" for the second half of the 20th century. Nearly everything we have today regarding the problems with Mormon history and truth claims were already found by these two and compiled into numerous books, including what is often considered their "magnum opus," titled, Mormonism-Shadow or Reality. The book is a huge 600 page (small print) tome, exhaustively covering just about every critical piece of historical information found, challenging the traditional narrative, foundation and truth claims in Mormonism. For those wanting a deep dive into the stuff not covered in Runnell's CES Letter, I would start here. This book should be in every ex-Mormon's library. Below is the table of contents:

If you want a FREE slightly condensed version of this book, the Tanners have kindly provided a PDF version of their other published book The Changing World of Mormonsim right here: http://www.utlm.org/onlinebooks/changecontents.htm I really wish Admin would add a link to this book on their front page. Also, see the Tanners' website which provides a wealth of information. The following link is to their topical index: http://www.utlm.org/navtopicalindex.htm Every time I see posters come here asking questions about the history, or seeking new books to read about the history, they should all just start with the above because it's probably in the above two books. Mormonism-Shadow or Reality should be the basic textbook for anyone questioning the church or wanting to learn more about the controversial parts of Mormonism.

Whenever I think of SERE I always go this wonderful moment. It's the middle of the night. I'm with a group of SEALs, some marine recon guys, a pilot, and 2 navigators. We're trying to get to a RP where we are supposed to be rescued by mercs. We think we're in the right spot and we see some armed dudes standing around silently. We were going to back off and discuss to see if we thought it was the mercs or just more opfore pretending to be the mercs when one of the Navigators just gets right the up and walks over like it's tea time. ltidiot: HEY GUYS I - 3 MAN TACKLE ltidiot is face down in the dirt and hog tied in like 10 seconds. They flip him over for a chat merc: WHAT'S YER NAME BOY ltidiot: wha- I? arn't you- SMACK SMACK merc: BOY I SAID WHAT'S YOUR FUCKING NAME ltidiot: I don't under st- SMACK SMACK merc: WHAT IS YOUR FUCKING NAME ltidiot: crying WILLIE NELSON! IT'S WILLIE NELSON SMACK SMACK SMACK SMACK merc: WHAT IS YOUR REAL FUCKING NAME YOU SMART ASS PIECE OF SHIT ltidiot: it's willie nelson sobs wilie nelson i swear instructor from off to the side: "uhh it really IS willie nelson" merc drops dude's head into the sand with a clonk merc: boy your momma musta hated you. I fucking could not stop laughing. Sleep deprivation makes stuff 10x more funny than normal. Event 2: To preface this event I had to meet the camp leader and be interrogated. They gave me a list of like 20 things to do in front of him to show respect. YOU WILL ADDRESS HIM AS ! you will do blah blah me: yep got it. SO WHAT WILL YOU DO me: all those things you said IF YOU EMBARASS ME I WILL KILL YOU me: ill do it all <10m or so pass> inmybrain: "i bet I can nail alice's friend before I leave. I should totally try to bar hop with them over the weekend. I thought I'd be hungrier. i miss dogs. oh look a fly" me: inmybrain: "oh man only a few more days. i wonder what alice is doing on saturday. i bet we can go get some bbq and maybe hit the beach before I fly out-" SMACK SmACK SMACK SMACK SMACK YOU WILL BOW TO AS I TOLD YOU!!! me: what? why didn't you say so <- literally not remembering he told me a bunch of shit to do lol I was genuinely puzzled why he was so mad SMACK SmACK SMACK SMACK SMACK me: it's not my fault you didn't tell me <- again I literally didn't remember until later he HAD told me a huge list of shit to do lol SMACK SmACK SMACK SMACK SMACK he actually took me aside and broke character and said I did a really good job and most people would have cracked. I laughed and told him I really didn't remember all those instructions. he smacked me one more time for that. So he would try to fuck with me whenever he saw me after that. Event 3: We're having a fun bit of being fire hosed in the middle of the night in our underwear. It's a lovely 50f or so in the desert at night so it was super fun. All the NSW people were having a blast and trying to share body heat. I don't think anyone got peed on. Anyway my favorite instructor yanks me aside and is obviously about to start some shit. Now I'm a hairy little bastard. Like wookie. Like every SEAL I ever swim with makes the, "take your sweater off!" joke, which was only funny the first one or two times. No no SERE guy brings the A game. OHH YOU HEAR WHAT HE SAY!!??! THIS ONE SAY HE WEREWOLF! HE TURN INTO WEREWOLF AND KILL US ALL! Per sleep depredation I am fucking dying laughing. He just starts hitting me and hitting me. And I cannot stop laughing and he's only allowed to hit me so many times at once I think lol. So he starts slamming me into the wall and i'm still laughing my ass off. I'm not the only one getting the special treatment either, everyone laughing is getting beat. Finally I think we finally managed to stop laughing and eventually they stopped hitting us. 10/10 would get hit again for funny joke. edit also yes I did have 'fun' over that weekend where you are done with SERE but gotta debrief 2 days later. "Alice" brought me one of her friends for a date, drove me straight to a microbrew/steak house, and is one of the most awesome people I know. edit no this isnt some weird joke dude was hit. it was funny.

2020.09.26 07:53 youngbull316My Presidential Theory in the form of the Early, Core, & Late system
Starting with the Silent Generation (I could possibly go further back in the near future): This is part I, with Range #1, because this is going to be too long to do both ranges. Range #1 (based on time of birth) Silent Generation = b. 1929-1944 (specifically, March 4, 1929 - April 12, 1945, a.k.a. Classes of 1947-1963) Early Silents = b. 1929-1932 (specifically, March 4, 1929 - March 4, 1933, a.k.a. Classes of 1947-1951) Have some remaining GI traits, were all born during the Herbert Hoover administration, and were for the most part, born in the early 30's, during the Great Depression. They were some of the main "Great Depression" kids of the 1930's, along with the younger GI's. Were largely big children and/or adolesecents (though the term probably didn't exist back then) during World War II and were the first full group to not be old enough to fight in it. They would of come of age in the late 1940's and were old enough to fight in the Korean War. They are largely the children of the Lost and Greatest Generation, and the parents of the Truman, Eisenhower, and JFK-born Boomers, as well as the LBJ-born Xers, give or take. Core Silents = b. 1933-1940 (specifically, March 4, 1933 - January 20, 1941, a.k.a. Classes of 1951-1959) I will break this up to two groups: Core Silents I & Core Silents II Core Silents I = b. 1933-1936 (specifically, March 4, 1933 - January 20, 1937, a.k.a. Classes of 1951-1955) They are the core representatives of the Silent Generation with no sort of overlap from the GI Generation whatsoever. They were born in the mid 30's during the first term of Franklin D. Roosevelt. They spent their childhood mainly in the early 1940's during the peak of World War II, so they are the main "World War II kids", came of age in the early 1950's during the Korean War and possibly could have fought in the war (probably the youngest though). They are largely the children of the Lost and Greatest Generation, and the parents of the Eisenhower and JFK-born Boomers, as well as the LBJ and Nixon-born Xers, give or take. Core Silents II = b. 1937-1940 (specifically, January 20, 1937 - January 20, 1941, a.k.a. Classes of 1955-1959) The first cohort to be born at the start of the new date for the presidential inauguration: January 20, instead of March 4. They were born in the late 30's during the second term of Franklin D. Roosevelt. This group numerically fits in the core but possibly has the earliest Baby Boomer traits. They were mainly kids at the end of World War II, and the start of the prosperity of the baby boom in the late 1940's, lasting throughout the 1950's. They were probably the main young adults of the civil rights movements (though the whole group was diverse in age) and the leaders of the hippie movement that largely influenced the Truman-born Boomers. They are largely the children of the Greatest Generation, and the parents of the JFK-born Boomers, LBJ and Nixon-born Xers, give or take. Late Silents = b. 1941-1944 (specifically, January 20, 1941 - April 12, 1945, a.k.a. Classes of 1959-1963) They were born in the early 40's during the third & fourth term of Franklin D. Roosevelt until his unfortunate passing before Harry S. Truman succeeded him. This group has strong Baby Boomer traits/influence. All or almost all of the Beatles are in this cohort. They spent their main childhood in the late 1940's and early 1950's, and came of age during the civil rights movement of the early 1960's and the Cuban Missile Crisis. They were the main "60's generation" that is widely known to describe the 40's born Baby Boomers. They are largely the children of the Greatest Generation, and the parents of the LBJ and Nixon/Ford-born Xers, give or take. Baby Boomers = b. 1945-1963 (specifically, April 12, 1945 - November 22, 1963, a.k.a. Classes of 1963-1982) Early Boomers = b. 1945-1948 (specifically, April 12, 1945 - January 20, 1949, a.k.a. Classes of 1963-1967) They were born in the mid-late 40's during the first term of Harry S. Truman, after Franklin D. Roosevelt passed away. This group has some strong Silent influence. They were the main "50's kids" and came of age at the time of JFK's and Malcolm X's assassination, the Civil Rights Movement, etc. They were a part of the soldiers of the Vietnam War, as they became of age to fight and got drafted to go to war. Three of US presidents came from this cohort and were all born the same year: 1946. They are largely the children of the Greatest Generation, and the parents of the Nixon/Ford and Carter-born Xers, as well as the Reagan-born Millennials, give or take. Core Boomers = b. 1949-1961 (specifically, January 20, 1949 - January 20, 1961, a.k.a. Classes of 1967-1979) This will break up in three groups: Core Boomers I, Core Boomers II, & Core Boomers III. Core Boomers I = b. 1949-1952 (specifically, January 20, 1949 - January 20, 1953, a.k.a. Classes of 1967-1971) They were born in the early 50's during the second term of Harry S. Truman. They spent the majority of their childhoods in the 1950's, so they are also the stereotypical "50's kid, 60's teen/young adult" Boomers. This group has little to no remaining influence from the Silent Generation. They also had to fight in the Vietnam War, just like their 40's born counterparts. They came of age during the Summer of Love '67, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy's assassinations, the tumultuous year of 1968, the moon landing, Woodstock '69, Kent State '70, etc. They are largely the children of the Greatest Generation, as well as the Hoover-born Silents, and the parents of the Ford and Carter-born Xers, as well as the Reagan-born Millennials, give or take. Core Boomers II = b. 1953-1956 (specifically, January 20, 1953 - January 20, 1957, a.k.a. Classes of 1971-1975) They were born in the mid 50's during the first term of Dwight D. Eisenhower. This group is the absolute core of the Baby Boomers, with completely no Silent Generation or Generation X traits. They spent the majority of their childhood early 60's and teenage years in the early 70's. They came of age when the US election allowed 18-20 year-olds to vote from the 21+ voting law and during Watergate, followed by then President Richard Nixon's resignation. This group was the very youngest that were able to fight in the Vietnam before its official end in 1975. They are largely the children of the Greatest Generation, as well as the Hoover and FDR-born Silents, and the parents of the Carter-born Xers, as well as the Reagan and Bush Sr.-born Millennials, give or take. Core Boomers III = b. 1957-1960 (specifically, January 20, 1957 - January 20, 1961, a.k.a. Classes of 1975-1979) They were born in the late 50's during the second term of Dwight D. Eisenhower. This group possibly are the first that have any X traits. They are the last to have memory of the JFK assassination. They were the main "60's kid, disco, and 80's 'yuppies'" generation. They came of age during the birth of Apple and the Star Wars series, release of Atari (which was the beginning of the home video game evolution), the Jonestown massacre, etc. They are largely the children of the Greatest Generation, as well as the Hoover and FDR-born Silents, and the parents of the Reagan, Bush Sr., and Clinton-born Millennials, give or take. Late Boomers = b. 1961-1963 (specifically, January 20, 1961 - November 22, 1963, a.k.a. Classes of 1979-1982) They were born in the early 60's during John F. Kennedy administration before his assassination. This group is on the cusp of Gen X, but is way more Baby Boomer than Gen X. They were kids in the late 60's during the Summer of Love '67, the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, the tumultuous year of 1968, the moon landing, Woodstock '69, Kent State '70, etc. They were teens in the late 70's during the rise of New Wave and the peak of Disco, before dying out around 1980. They were probably the very first video game teenagers since the Atari was released in 1977 when they were underclassmen in high school. They came of age during the rise of arcades, the Iran hostage crisis, the early 80's recession, 1980 election, death of John Lennon, inauguration and failed assassination of Ronald Reagan, etc. They are largely the children of the Hoover and FDR-born Silents, and the parents of the Reagan, Bush Sr., and Clinton-born Millennials, give or take. Generation X = b. 1964-1980 (specifically, November 22, 1963 - January 20, 1981, a.k.a. Classes of 1982-1999) Early Xers = b. 1964-1968 (specifically, November 22, 1963 - January 20, 1969, a.k.a. Classes of 1982-1987) They were born in the mid-late 60's, after John F. Kennedy's assassination and during the Lyndon B. Johnson administration, at the peak of the Vietnam War. This group cusps with the Baby Boomers and is a lot more Gen X than Boomer. They are probably the first to not really remember the 60's decade, the peak cultural decade for the Boomers in every aspect (the 1970's was more quintessentially Baby Boomer in youth but childhood culture was Gen X-oriented). They were the main group of "70's kids" and the ones most nostalgic of their 70's childhood and 80's teenage years. Most of the 80's teen movies had actors in this cohort. They came of age during the early years of MTV, crack & AIDS epidemic, Iran-Contra affair, Challenger explosion, Cold War, etc. They are largely the children of the Hoover and FDR-born Silents, and the parents of the Bush Sr., Clinton-born Millennials, as well as the Bush Jr.-born Zoomers, give or take. Core Xers = b. 1969-1976 (specifically January 20, 1969 - January 20, 1977, a.k.a. Classes of 1987-1995) There are two cores: Core Xers I & Core Xers II. Core Xers I = b. 1969-1974 (specifically, January 20, 1969 - August 9, 1974, a.k.a. Classes of 1987-1992) They were mainly born in the early 70's during the Richard Nixon administration up until his resignation. This group has little to no remaining Boomer influence and are pretty solidly Gen X. Their main childhood was in the mid-late 70's and the early 80's, while having a nearly pure 80's adolescence. They were the first true video game generation as they grew up with the Atari as kids, played at arcades as tweens, and had the NES as teenagers. They were the main "Hair Metal, New Jack Swing, Grunge" teens of the mid-late 80's and very early 90's. They came of age during the tail end of the Cold War, fall of the Berlin War, collapse of the USSR, release of Nelson Mandela from prison and end of apartheid, beatings of Rodney King & LA riots, etc. They are largely children of the FDR-born Silents and the Truman-born Boomers, and the parents of the Clinton-born Millennials and Bush Jr.-born Zoomers, give or take. Core Xers II = b. 1975-1976 (specifically, August 9, 1974 - January 20, 1977, a.k.a. Classes of 1992-1995) They were born in the mid 70's during the Gerald Ford administration, after Nixon resigned. This group is the core representative of Generation X, similar to their Nixon-born counterparts. They have little to no Millennial traits, also very solidly Gen X. Their main childhood happened in the early Reagan era of the early 80's, and core teen years were in the early 90's, so they would have been the core Grunge teens. They came of age after the Cold War ended, during the WTC bombing, death of Kurt Cobain, etc. They are largely children of the FDR-born Silents and the Truman-born Boomers, and the parents of the Clinton-born Millennials and Bush Jr. Zoomers, give or take. Late Xers = b. 1977-1980 (specifically, January 20, 1977 - January 20, 1981, a.k.a. Classes of 1995-1999) They were born in the late 70's during the Jimmy Carter administration. This group cusps with Millennials, so they have major Millennial traits. They were the main "80's kids" and teenagers during the Grunge, flannel, Gangsta Rap, dark core 90's, and young adults in the late 90's/early 00's. They came of age during the OJ Simpson trials, launch of Windows 95, Tupac and Biggie assassinations, Princess Diana's death, Monica Lewinsky scandal, etc. They are largely the children of the Truman and Eisenhower-born Boomers, and the parents of the Bush Jr. and Obama-born Zoomers, give or take. Millennials = b. 1981-2000 (specifically, January 20, 1981 - January 20, 2001, a.k.a. Classes of 1999-2019) Early Millennials = b. 1981-1984 (specifically, January 20, 1981 - January 20, 1985, a.k.a. Classes 1999-2003) They were born in the early 80's during the Ronald Reagan's first term. This group cusps with Gen X, so they have major X traits. They were the main late 80's & early 90's kids and teens of the late 90's. They never spent a day in high school without the internet (Windows 95) and were all in high school for Columbine & Y2K, some were even in high school during 9/11. They came of age during the Columbine shootings, Y2K, the new millennium (hence the term "Millennials"), 9/11, the start of the Iraq War, etc. They are largely the children of the Truman, Eisenhower, and JFK-born Boomers, and the parents of the Bush Jr. and Obama-born Zoomers, give or take. Core Millennials = b. 1985-1996 (specifically, January 20, 1985 - January 20, 1997, a.k.a. Classes of 2003-2015) There are three groups of Core Millennials: Core Millennials I, Core Millennials II, and Core Millennials III Core Millennials I = b. 1985-1988 (specifically, January 20, 1985 - January 20, 1989, a.k.a. Classes of 2003-2007) They were born in the mid-late 80's during Ronald Reagan's second term. This group has some leftover X traits, but too solidly Millennial to be on the cusp. They were the main group of "90's kids" that so embraced their childhoods in the 90's the most that they would brag about it online and helped form a lot of the 90's nostalgia from the late 00's to mid 10's before going mainstream. They were "Y2K era" early 00's and "MySpace era" core 00's teenagers who were the last to spend a good chunk of high school before social media blew up and the middle & high schoolers during 9/11. They came of age during the Iraq War, SARS pandemic, rise of social media, Hurricane Katrina, Pluto no longer labeled as a planet, etc. They are largely the children of the Truman, Eisenhower and JFK-born Boomers, and the parents of the Obama-born Zoomers, as well as the Trump-born Alpha, give or take. Core Millennials II = b. 1989-1992 (specifically, January 20, 1989 - January 20, 1993, a.k.a. Classes of 2007-2011) They were born in the early 90's during the George H.W. Bush administration. This group is the most quintessential Millennial cohort with absolutely no traits of neighboring generation. They were the younger "90's kids" that were a lot more gatekeepy with the "90's kid" label towards the younger 90's babies that didn't make the cutoff than their mid-late 80's born counterparts (even though they are more 90's kids than the early 90's borns). These were the peak emo teens of the mid-late 00's. They came of age during the Virginia Tech shooting, release of the iPhone, Great Recession, 2008 election, H1N1 pandemic, Iraq War, etc. They are largely the children of the Eisenhower and JFK-born Boomers, as well as the LBJ-born Xers, and the parents of the Obama-born Zoomers, as well as the Trump and future-born Alpha, give or take. Core Millennials III = b. 1993-1996 (specifically, January 20, 1993 - January 20, 1997, a.k.a. Classes of 2011-2015) They were born in the mid 90's during the first term of Bill Clinton. This group has some overlapping Z influence, but are still very strongly Millennial. They were the main early 2000's kids and were the last to remember any part of the 90's. They were the main scene and electropop teens of the early 2010's. They came of age during the Osama Bin Laden assassination, end of the Iraq War, Occupy Wall Street, 2012 election, Aurora & Sandy Hook shooting, 2012 apocalypse, smartphones going mainstream and fully accessible, peak of SJW movements, rise of ISIS & BLM, Ebola, etc. They are largely the children of the Eisenhower and JFK-born Boomers, as well as the LBJ and the Nixon/Ford Xers, and the parents of Generation Alpha, give or take. Late Millennials = b. 1997-2000 (specifically, January 20, 1997 - January 20, 2001, a.k.a. Classes of 2015-2019) They were born in the late 90's during the second term of Bill Clinton. This group cusps with Gen Z, and has some strong Z influence. They were the main "2000's kids" that don't remember the 90's at all and were preteens as the 2010's rolled around. They were the main core 2010's teens. They came of age during the legalization of gay marriage, backlash of BLM, rise of anti-SJW movements, 2016 election, Pulse & Parkland shooting, etc. They are largely the children of the Eisenhower and JFK-born Boomers, as well as the LBJ and the Nixon/Ford Xers, and the parents of Generation Alpha, give or take. Generation Z = b. 2001-2017 (specifically, January 20, 2001 - January 20, 2017, a.k.a. Classes of 2019-2035) Early Gen Z = b. 2001-2004 (specifically, January 20, 2001 - January 20, 2005, a.k.a. Classes of 2019-2023) They were born in the early 00's during the first term of George W. Bush. This group cusps with Millennials and has some strong Millennial influence. They are the first to not be able to remember the early 00's (all Millennials have some memory of that era, even if it was super vague). They were the main late 2000's and early 2010's kids and the first group of kids totally removed from the 90's and 20th century (the oldest were technically conceived in the 20th century). They are all the first post-9/11 born generation (the oldest were alive before it, though). They are currently coming of age and the only major event so far is the coronavirus pandemic that shifted their school careers and lives forever, not just affecting them but people of all ages. They were largely the children of the LBJ, Nixon/Ford, and Carter-born Xers, as well as the Reagan-born Millennials, and the parents of Generation Alpha and beyond, give or take. Core Gen Z = b. 2005-2012 (specifically, January 20, 2005 - January 20, 2013, a.k.a. Classes of 2023-2031) There are two cores of Gen Z: Core Gen Z I & Core Gen Z II Core Gen Z I = b. 2005-2008 (specifically, January 20, 2005 - January 20, 2009, a.k.a. Classes of 2023-2027) They were born in the mid-late 00's during the second term of George W. Bush. This group is the first to really have ultimately no Millennial traits and are 100% Zoomer. They don't have any memory of the release of the iPhone, Great Recession, 2008 election, etc. They were the main 2010's kids, and are the last to have a 100%, full childhood experience prior to COVID-19, as they all turned 11 (where I end childhood at) in January 2020 and earlier, before the virus even came to the US (it was just in Wuhan, China at the time, so the US and almost the whole world was living in a pre-COVID environment), so they are the last true pre-COVID kids. They grew up on games like Minecraft, Roblox, etc., as well as being the first kids of Fortnite, despite their childhood being nearly over with at that point. They will come of age in the core of the 2020's but for now they are in their early teens as underclassmen in high school at best. They are largely the children of the LBJ, Nixon/Ford, and Carter-born Xers, as well as the Reagan-born Millennials, and the parents of Generation Alpha and beyond, give or take. Core Gen Z II = b. 2009-2012 (specifically, January 20, 2009 - January 20, 2013, a.k.a. Classes of 2027-2031) They were born in the early 10's during the first term of Barack Hussein Obama. This group is the last to have no remote Alpha traits and are 100% Zoomer. They grew up as kids in the late 2010's, and they were the last to spend a majority of their childhood pre-COVID19 but are the first to still witness childhood during it, though they are the older kids of it. They are the first core Fortnite kids, since they were all at peak childhood age as the game came out in 2017 and beyond. They don't have any memory of the Sandy Hook shooting, 2012 apocalypse but were born before it (the youngest weren't), a pre-ISIS world, etc. They are largely the children of the Carter-born Xers, as well as the Reagan and Bush Sr.-born Millennials, give or take. Late Gen Z = b. 2013-2017 (specifically, January 20, 2013 - January 20, 2017, a.k.a. Classes of 2031-2035) They were born in the mid 10's during the second term of Barack Hussein Obama. This group cusps with Gen Alpha, so they have major Alpha traits. They are growing up as kids currently throughout the early 2020's in a COVID-19 world. They are also core Fortnite kids but probably don't remember a world before it, neither do they remember a world before the legalization of gay marriage, the 2016 election, the Parkland shooting, etc. They might be the last to remember a pre-COVID19 world. They will all come of age a whole decade from now in the early 2030's. They are largely the children of the Carter-born Xers, as well as the Reagan and Bush Sr.-born Millennials, give or take. Generation Alpha = b. 2017- most likely 2032 (specifically, January 20, 2017 - January 20, 2033, a.k.a. Classes of 2035-2051) Early Alpha = b. 2017-2020 (specifically, January 20, 2017 - January 20, 2021, a.k.a. Classes of 2035-2039) They were born in the late 10's and are still being born as of now during the first term of Donald J. Trump. Not much to say about them at all as the oldest just entered their childhood. They will not remember a pre-COVID world but most of them were born before it happened. They will be able to remember the aftermath and that is what makes them a new generation, as well as some other factors. They are largely the children of the Reagan, Bush Sr., and Clinton-born Boomers, give or take. The Alpha kids born 2021+ are not even born yet and could possibly even be Biden babies instead of Trump babies 2.0. So what do you think about this?

Typically I only post questions, but my latest discovery is too exciting not to share with genealogy-appreciating people! Some of you may have seen my past posts in regards to my fourth great-grandparents, Obadiah Nelson Cunningham and his wife, Frances Barnes Forgee Ellis. Despite my efforts, I'd been unable to determine who Obadiah Nelson's parents were, as early census records only note the heads of house. He was born around 1813 in Orange County, New York and vital records during that timeframe are hit or miss. A few weeks ago I visited the Orange County Genealogy Society in Goshen, New York. I was hoping to find critical information in books and writings not available online. While I did find Cunningham information that may be helpful down the line, I found nothing about Obadiah Nelson. However, I did meet another researcher who offered to help search for my Cunningham ancestors. When the researcher contacted me, he provided several critical records for the Cunningham generation above, but we still couldn't put parents to Obadiah Nelson. One of the things the researcher showed me was how to research deed records. In the past, I only ever looked at the deed index - for whatever reason it never occurred to me that there was another set of records where you can read the original deed. So earlier this week, on a whim, I decided to type Obadiah Nelson into FamilySearch and see what I came up with. Of course, I saw records I'd glanced at dozens of times, but now I knew how to read into them more. I picked a record that had Obadiah Nelson's wife's name listed and pulled up the deed. Reading further, I was literally brought to tears when I read (paraphrasing here) that the land being sold belonged to a Julia Cunningham, who died interstate, and the land had been left to her surviving children, Samuel A Cunningham and Obadiah N Cunningham. I'm still in awe that I have an actual document that gives me a mother and brother to Obadiah Nelson! But, it gets better! I already had a suspicion that Obadiah Nelson's parents were Obadiah Cunningham and Julia Clark, daughter of Jeremiah Clark. The census records, naming conventions, timeframe and other researching fit perfectly. I decided to look into deeds regarding Julia Cunningham, and found one from 1836 of her selling land. The plot of land was in Cornwall, Orange County and the deed specifically states (paraphrasing here) that the land was given to her as a gift in 1799 by her father, Jeremiah Clark! Additionally, the deed lists her sister Deborah and her husband, Francis Mandeville. This names and dates match up with other records and a genealogy book regarding the Clark Family. Hands down, this has been the best thing I've ever discovered. I'm still in disbelief that I have records that clearly state these family relations, and stunned and a little proud that my suspicions turned out to be correct all along. Of course, I could never have gotten to this point without the online community and the researchers I've met in person. And despite a fruitless travel to the Orange County Genealogy Society, I never would have met the researcher who showed me how to research deeds had I never gone! Who knows how much longer I would have scrolled past those deed records, thinking the only records listed were the indexes. Now I can happily add to my family tree that Obadiah Nelson's parents are Obadiah Cunningham and Julia Clark, and I've added a new sibling, Samuel A Cunningham and his line to the tree. There's still more loose ends to tie up, but I'm over the Moon at this discovery. If you got this far, thanks for reading! Happy researching!
